my dad is thinking about getting an i-shaft for his D-11. i am wondering if you have to register the new shaft in order to get the warranty/servicing, or if the warranty would also cover a used shaft? he has not tried one and hates to buy a new one for $200+ when he could get a used one for around half the price.

any help on this is appreciated, louis

You have to show proof that you purchased it from an authorized McD dealer. Normally I just send in a photo copy of my original sales reciept when I send my McD stuff in to be repaired.

Hmmm, i thought sure i heard they honored that lifetime warranty against warping and you did'nt need a reciept. Keep in mind i could be dead wrong! lol! If your dad can maybe ask the person who has the used shaft if they also have the reciept? Either way good luck.

I have purchased 3 I-shafts used here on the Forum. Never had a problem with warranty work with McDermott. There was never a request for a receipt. They have cleaned, re-sealed, and put a new Moori tip on these shafts without any questions. Just fill out the work order which you download from their website. THere's no charge for the work but there is a $21 charge for shipping and handling. I once sent in two cues and the only charge was the $21 S&H charge. That works out to only a little over $10 per shaft - and that includes a new Moori tip. Can't beat that warranty plus they are great playing shafts.

yes i know that is a good warranty/maintainence plan, hard to beat that new tip and a cleaning for 21 bucks s/h. if i were to do it i would charge him or anyone else 45 for that work. and most everybody else would charge 40-50 bucks for that work also, not to mention s/h if they sent it out somewhere.

Have you had them replace a warped shaft?

The maintenance program and warranty are two different things. They will do any McD one on the maintenance without proof of purchase. For actually replacing a warped shaft/butt/etc, they need proof. I had an issue with this previously.

one of my friends is a mcd dealer and had sold a few cues in the area, when they need repairs or maintainence(not sure which?) they did not register there cues so the warranty did not apply. once he found out about this the dealer registers the cues for them now...smart and super classy move...kudos to you fred!

I shaft

For the best fit you should send in the butt of the cue so the I shaft can be fit to it. Any cue they make with a phenolic joint is made with the phenolic at the shaft end and butt end from one piece. It is turned as one piece and then made into 2. That's why every McDermott shaft doesn't matchup flush when they are interchanged. With stainless steel joints the dimensions are more predictable.

They do not charge extra to get a new shaft to matchup with a butt. The receipt is mandatory for any warranty replacement.

If it's a currently made cue (or they sell one with the same rings). If it's not a current line and they have to make the rings special they will charge you extra. That of course is assuming the cue you're buying the shaft for is a McD...

Thanks for the clarification. You're right and I've mistakenly called the maintenance program warranty work. Never had a warped McDermott shaft. The only issue I've ever had with a McDermott cue was one where the shaft screwed on very tightly. Since it was a brand new cue, they were nice enough to send me a prepaid UPS form so that I could send the cue back for rework without paying any shipping charges. Not many companies would do that.

A friend deliberately broke his cue in a fit of anger. Not only did the shaft break but the forearm cracked as well. There was going to be no fixing it. They replaced it for $200. He paid $359 new from a web dealer. They never asked for proof of purchase or even for the broken cue. They just took care of it.

My friend was thrilled they sent it with a g core shaft instead of the standard one he got it with.

Granted not the same as a warp or manufacturer defect, but I have found them to be a pleasure to deal with. They have always gone the extra mile for me.

They replaced the butt and shaft of a cue of mine under maintenance (both warped badly during a move in the moving truck), but I did pay $70 extra to upgrade to G-Core when they did so. I didn't have a receipt (lost it), but did send along the 3 receipts I had for the other McD's I own and they took my word for it!

Over all, I think they are one of the best cue companies you could ever deal with and I'm going to be a customer of theirs for life! I hope some day to have some custom cues, but I'll still be buying their product as well!
