Anyone have any experience with one of the new McDermott i2's . . . I was talking with Nielsens and they said they are doing phenomenally well with them . . . lots of Predator players switching over to them . . . just curious what, if any feedback you guys may be able to offer up . . . thanks.

Me Tooo.

I haven't heard much about the new I2; however, I play with the original I2 and thought about stepping up. Also, if anyone knows were I could get a blank new I2 let me know.

I hated it. Whippy and performed poorly. The feedback from the graphite was bad and simply did not perform like a other "Engineered" shafts. The guys at Pred & OB1 are not losing sleep on this one.

A few people have asked me about this shaft and I slip off my Pred and throw the I2 on. I let them try my 314, OB1 and conventional shafts back to back. Then I let them hit the I2 last. Nobody to date has said they liked the McDermott.

Hey Nick,

Just so we are talking about the samething, are you referring to the new or old I2. I have the old and thought about the new. If you, are anyone else, has both and can tell me the difference, please let us know what it is.

jdsons.

P.S. Sorry if i hijacked your thread bud, hopefully you could use the information also.

I have one of the first I2 and being a loyal McD user I have to say I was a little let down. My shaft had a fairly uneven surface which I certainly felt when I played with it. This put me actually of continuing playing with it....
So what happened - I bought OB1 and have never looked back.

Mine was a wood-to-wood version.

Probably not helping you, but it was just a feedback.

It's about a year old. My cue maker also commented that there was some loose glue which fell out when he drilled a hole in the shaft for mounting. I suspect the shaft is hollow all the way down the graphite tube.

I2 shaft

I shot a bit with he I2 shaft on recommendation from someone at Nielsen's in Springfield. They weren't an employee at the store, but obviously someone closely affiliated/friends with Joe and the crew. This dude told me I should try out I2, don't know if it is a "new" or "old" one. He had his cue with an I2 w/ him and let me shoot a few shots. For reference, I was playing with a Predator sneaky at the time and really liked the hit. I was at Nielsen's to buy a higher end Predator something with a bit more solid hit feel. I didn't dislike the I2, however I ended up buying a Predator 5k3 instead. The reason I prefered the Predator shaft was for consistency between shafts... they all play the same... I was used to the Predator so I stuck with the Predator 314-2.

FWIW, I just recently bought a Bob Frey sneaky and its the best playing cue/shaft that I've touched. Of course that is a subjective statement. But give me a Frey(or a scruggs) shaft and a sniper tip any day of the week. Not to diss the I2 or predator, but to each their own. I just like the Frey shaft, because it seems a bit whippy while being a bit firmer than a predator. I like a shaft with a bit of give. I also like the larger shaft size, the sniper tip, and prefer the nickel shape on the tip. I plan on getting a second shaft for the Frey, and their maybe inconsistencies between the two shafts, but c'est la vie. Variety is the spice of life.

Nick B,

I also had my I2 fitted by a cue maker, and did not experiance any of that. Sounds like you got a defective blank. I would contact Mcdermott and their lifetime warranty department and see what you could do. Tell them this story

New I2 on a McDermott... I paid the extra and had the McD factory do the work to match it rather than going through a dealer (in part because I bought it relatively close to the border between the new and old I2's and didn't want to get old stock)... anyway, I'm happy with it, I occassionally get a weird feedback from the graphite when I hit the ball at medium speeds more than a tip and a half off center, but I never get any bad effect because of it, just a dead vibration feeling.

But for every other shot I really like the thing, I'm not 100% sure I'd spend the cash for a low deflection shaft again, but neither am I upset that I did.
