McDermott M81A vs Players HXT30

They call them LD (as opposed to ND) for a reason.

Slaya, may I ask what kind of cue you play with currently and what do you like/dislike about it?

gr. Dave

Thanks for all the tips, it seems as though the McDermott is clearly the better choice here.

I currently play with a hand-me-down sportcraft fiberglass cue. My complaints are, in comparison to a wood cue, the shaft isn't *slick*. To clarify, the shaft on my fiberglass cue is clean, free of scratches, and glides well, but isn't as smooth as a wood shaft. Also, the feel of the hit has a zingy sound to it, lacking very little feel.

Just looking to purchase my first cue, mainly.

Hey guys. First off I just wanna say thanks so MUCH for all the help you guys gave me on helping me find a cue.

I just found a deal I couldn't refuse, so I purchased it.

I hit up ebay, as most people suggested in my other thread and searched for the McDermott cue. I found a similar model, the McDermott M81E to the one the pool hall was selling. As far as I can tell it looks to be about the same thing. Although it was a few more bucks than the used one, it is NEW! I actually like the color scheme on the M81E better than the M81A.

I hope I made the right decision, and I hope the M81E is just as good as the M81A.

Was that a good deal? could it be a fake?

Thanks

I don't think it is a fake. McDermott cues without points can be had for around $100 used. You got a good deal. They are great playing cues. The one you passed on has points which was also a very good deal. How much was it? I would be interested in it but not sure of the location.

It was a pool hall around here, in long island NY. The guy wanted 150$, but it had a slight *roll* (it seemed straight to me, but he rolled it on the table and said it had just a slight roll), and he knew my budget so he said he'd give it to me for 100$.

Now, I gotta get myself a cheap case to hold the cue now. I really hope I like this cue.

The first cue did not have real points, basically stickers called "overlays". Not nearly the same. You could have 10 overlay points on the cue and it would hardly be more money than a no point or a 4 point overlay cue, where a 10 real cut point cue should be several 100 more than a 4 pt one at least. Most custom cue makers charge per point/inlay, when using overlays it's basically just the cost of the sticker and work of applying it.

Players are made in the same place as Lucasi's are.I would choose the Players, great Warranty and there Quality control has spruced up and there cues play pretty darn sporty.

I already purchased the McDermott m81e, lol. I'm not feeling too bad about it though  I guess from my perspective, i'm coming from a 20$ kmart stick, to a legitimate, respectable cue.

I believe either of the two would have more than satisfied me.

Atleast this way, I feel that down the road, I could sell it for a similar price to what I paid. In comparison to the Players cue, which I would definetly be selling for much less than what I paid.

Regarding the warranty, I stopped believing in so much of that because i've heard from more than one person that it's a gimmick. I don't find this too hard to believe considering I cannot for the life of me find an official website for Players cue's.

I'm sure i'll like the cue. Hopefully one day I can compare it to the Players HXT cue and see if I really made the wrong move, lol!

I must say though, I really did like the look of the Players cue a lot more than the McDermott.

Players is marketed by cue and case, they are the owners of the brand, you will find their "home" on www.cueandcase.com

http://www.facebook.com/PlayersCues This is the cue I bought my son as a reward for getting to the Jr. National tournament and for practicing better http://www.cueandcase.com/supplies/HXTE10.html He used in a few tournaments and I always see people ask to look at it. Plus at 12 he's doing really well with it, he has either won or gone hill hill in the tournaments against players 2-3-4 times his age.

Really, as your first real cue, you are probably about 4-5 cues away from the one you will be using in 10-15 years so don't worry too much about this pick. When I started, had a Mali, a few lower end McD, a cheap Steve Miz cue I got on a military base during basic training, a custom from a local MA cue maker which got stolen, a Joss Ltd that I played with for about 10 years then jumped to a Samsara, a Carolina Customs, an Arthur (which is still in my avatar pic) and finally my Ned Morris which I had for several years. I just bought a HXT Players shaft after using only standard shafts for all these years, so I guess you can kinda call this a new cue as well although I'm using it on the Ned Morris cue. That's in about 22-24 yrs. And is probably average for a player that has played that long.

imo they're both decent starter cues, so you'll probably be happy with whichever you choose. which pool hall on long island do you usually play at?

I usually go to Felt, on Jericho turnpike because I been working down the block from there. I stop there sometimes when I get off work. It's like 8$ an hour for one person.

Quite a few years back, I would goto Doc's on main street, in Bay Shore. I've been there like once or twice as well recently. It just costs like 12$ an hour, so I prefer Felt.

What about you?

Hrmmm

Now you've got me thinking about canceling the McDermott cue and getting the Players cue.

This drama has gone on long enough.
You are starting to sound like a little girl that can not make up her mind about a prom dress.
Buy one of theses cues and be done.
You have had enough attention for a $100 cue.

Feel your shoulders being gripped? Feel them being shaken?

For gawdsakes! You ordered the McDermott. Enjoy playing with it when it arrives. You're going to have as good a cue as you'll find for $100.

Now, go inside and play!
