is it true that the older mcdermotts are harder hitting cues than the new ones. i have noticed that the taper of the new shafts are very long. also i have seen inlays which are not perfect. please tell me anything you know about that brand.
thanks!

The very first cue I ever owned was a McDermott D-1 (later went to a McDermott D-16).

Through the years I have played with and owned pretty much every kind of cue there is out there. Some really expensive, and some not so much.

When I returned to playing pool in 2004 after a 9-year layoff I needed a cue, came on here and bought a McDermott Sword.

I never saw any difference between that cue and the McDermotts I had previously owned. The hit was just as good and the inlay work was perfect (as would be expected from computer generated inlays).

But, to be honest, I am very much a proponent of "archer not arrow."

I believe that you cannot go wrong with a McDermott - old or new. I have been playing with my D-21 for 22 years now. I would highly recommend going to McDermott site and going into their resale section - HERE IS A LINK- and get your hands on some of the older McDermott's, they are well worth the money.

As far as shafts, admittedly, I switched over to the Predator Z Shaft in 2005, and recently just switched to the OB-1 Shaft a few weeks ago. They both work great with my McDermott.

I also agree with McKinney Miner - it's the archer, not the arrow - BTW - Jeff what ever happened to your D-16?

I have a McD from around 1994 or 95 that pretty much sits in my back room and is used by anyone that comes over.

It is one of a couple cues that I pick off the wall sometimes to hit balls...just becuase it is quicker than getting my cue out of a case and screwing it together...

Every time I pick it up I am reminded why I don't use it...

The Butt is as thick as a tree trunk...I wonder if the current day Butt diameters are smaller....

Very much to my chagrin it has been lost to the annals of time...

I am pretty sure it was involved in a trade in the late 1980's that netted me a really nice custom Joss.

I would love to have that D-16 back.

Funny story: A couple of weeks ago on here a guy in the Wanted/For Sale section is selling off a massive collection of McDermotts for a friend.

One of the cues is a dead ringer for my D-16. Same wrap, etc.

I offer the guy $350, but he turns me down.

2 days later someone else offers him $350 and he accepts!

Ugh!

There is a difference...

I started with a D1 in my younger days and actually quit playing for some years when it was stolen.

"Picking up the glove" again I bought a "Symphony" cue. Old school looking and was pretty happy with it. Then I went for a M207 with a I-2 shaft. This was a strange mix and I went back to a 314 shaft on this cue (never played with any of the original ones after I started playing again). This cue was front heavy and had a little strange feeling.

I did come over a D22 cue at Ebay and was really happy with this one. As mentioned in another post here, the older cues where a little thicker in the grip area compared to later models. When I bought a OB-1 shaft to this cue, I was totally in love. This combo has been my preferred cue for a long time now. I thought it was a little to bad that the M207 was just parked, so I bought a new OB-1 shaft also for this. TOTALY DIFFERENT.

Many has said that the shaft is giving 99% of the feeling. For me this has for sure not been the case. Using OB-1 on both cues do give a different feeling, which I think everyone would recognize without being "picky".

So in basic facts:

-The older cue line has a fully spliced butt section where the A joint is much higher compared to the later ones. This was in the period when Mr McDermott owned the company.

-The newer cue line use no spliced points but uses inlayed points.
I think this was after Mr. McDermott sold the company to his son - which again sold the company (out of the family I believe). Todays cues is therefor a little different then the "good old" ones.

To compare old/new construction - have a look here : http://www.kendocues.com/Websted/Pictures/Sider/Xray_of_shaft_&_Cue.html#grid

Later models is the top cue, older one is the bottom one.

Hope it helps.

I have a C-3 which I've owned over twenty years. It seems softer to me than the new ones although I've never hit with them side by side. It has Flex-O-Matic shafts like the Meuccis of that era. You can put a ton of spin on the CB but be prepared for serious deflection. It's not a bad cue (and actually quite fun to play with once in a while) but I think the old ones are coveted more for nostalgia than playability. I have two Predators, a Shurtz, and an Espiritu which I'd rather play with regularly.

Well, I put a modern shaft on mine and I have parked many cues in favor for the OB-1+D22 combo - even a $1200 Shon LTD:D
