McDermott Shafts

About a month ago i finally bought myself a nice pool cue to shoot with since i shoot a good bit, i bought a McDermott Arizona and it has the G core shaft, prior to this i had been occasionally using an old McDermott cue that a friend of mine had, he knows nothing about it someone gave it to him. Through some research i found out that it is a McDermott EB10 from the EB series which was made during the mid 1990s.the Shaft on his cue is much smaller in diameter than mine and much smaller than just about any shaft ive seen. I like the smaller shafts because it seems like you can be alot more precise with your shots, my question is can you buy these smaller diameter shafts if so who makes them? ive heard a guy say one time that you can have your shaft sent off and they can put it on a lathe to make the diameter smaller, I don't know how true that is so i need some information on all of this.

I shoot with a Dale Perry butt and a McDermott I-3 shaft. The shaft has a European taper with an 11.75" tip diameter. The tip is a Moori Soft. The cue with the I-3 has a wonderful balance and I too love the feel of geometric precision when hitting the cue exactly where I want. I bought the shaft here on this forum for a great price. I recently sent it to McDermott for a cleaning, reseal and new Moori Soft tip under McDermott's warranty. There was no charge except for $19.99 shipping and handling. I had a black snake leather wrap installed on the butt by Jim Lee and it really enhances the feel of the cue. I am completely happy with it.

Any cue repair person or a cue maker with a lathe should be able to turn down the saft a few tenths with no issues. The charge and time needed is based on how thin you want to go. I think 1-2/10ths would be quick, anything past that would need a rest before turning to ensure the wood does not warp. Just don't have your buddy with sandpaper do it. The EB10 shaft was probably thicker when new, the wear and "cleaning" of it over the years would have caused the size difference. My 1990s Joss shaft is quite a bit thinner now than it was when new.
