Mcdermott VS Joss joint

As most of you know i have been giving myself brain damage deciding on a cue. I'm going to order on Monday. It's going to be a Joss or a McD. I went to a local dealer and gave both a final look and just relized that a McD shaft has wooden threads and the Joss has metal.It seems to me that the wood threads would wear out quicker then the metal. Am i off base here? By the way i'm leaning towards the Joss just on looks alone.

I own several joss and mcdermott cues, both are good playing cues. Imo, i like the joss better, but have shot with mcdermotts that play great. As far as the wooden theads in the mcdermott shaft, i havent ever had a problem with them yet. I do like the mcdermott warrenty better though. But my main player is a joss.

there is a large amount of people that prefer no metal insert. many high end customs use these big pins.

You can also find Joss cues with a radial pin (not many, but they exist).

Radial fits really snug while piloted joints align the shaft really good (not that radial doesn't). Another factor to consider is that a stainless collar/joint will produce a more forward balance than a radial pin with a phenolic collar for example. I think balance is more important than the subtle difference in hit between different types of joints.

Well, the 5/16-14 piloted joint has been used by a large number of very reputable cue makers. Joss uses it as well.

As to the threads wearing out, it does happen occasionally, but it is fairly rare. Even if the first thread tears out of the wood, the rest usually are enough to keep things together.

In either case, these are the reasons you order a cue with two shafts (not just for loosing a tip)!:thumbup:
