Measurable Improvement from Equipment Change

I know in golf they've tested the 'new putter syndrome' where players were give a new putter of their choosing. They all putted better, for a while, then reverted back to their normal putting stats. The improvement, as expected, was like 90% mental: the players were more excited, had better concentration, were basically just 'into it' more. This heightened state lasted about a month iirc.

A cue changed my billiard life….into my early 30s my best game by far was snooker. When I played pool, I would give myself a limit….I was never going broke to it. Then a friend gave me a ‘68 Joss…..had a cracked ivory ferrule…took it to Al Safron in Detroit….told him to cut dowel right off, my snooker cue was 57 inches anyway. As an afterthought, I told him to make it 12 mm…..figured it might suit my snooker instincts. After hitting for a half hour at the Rack, I made a 9-ball game with one of the guys I’d been ducking….I killed him…within three weeks, a dozen players had quit me with the 8, and wouldn’t take the 7.

Al Safron had handed me a new universe….within six months, I was playing some pretty tough one hole, also.

As a young player, I was very accurate…..too dumb to realize I shouldn’t be playing with a 13 mm.
The value of owning your own cue is how it spins.
Dumb?? 13mm??
I guess smaller tips work better for you and your stroke??
Personally, I prefer a larger tip size. More forgiving of stroke errors imo. That's just my finding w shooting off the rail, draws, etc...

I get this with all the sticks I've bought. Finally figured out I was all best form when I was trying them.

At least I'm the Indian... lol

I'm sure Parica played his fair share in flip flops in the Philippines and I'm almost certain it wasn't an issue.
and? He has god given talent you don’t have. willie hoppie played side armed because he was an idiot savant …I’m guessing you aren’t so I wouldn’t change your stroke any time soon. stop comparing yourself to the best players in the world And what they play with or do. I try to keep everything I can as consistently the same from my shoes to my pre shot routine. Less variables the better.

Would you please share what shoes you wear?

I wore boots for a few decades. My wife found it funny, boots or barefoot, nothing in between! I bought a business in a city of a bit less than forty thousand, about the same sized airbase forming a "twin city" of sorts. Three cowboy stores in town and this was in farm and cattle country, I never considered I might have a problem finding a single "E" width boot. Working day and night I almost walked out of my boots before I tried to replace them. None to be had in town or nearby!

I bought a pair of the cheap running shoe style tennis shoes. Everybody found it hilarious that I couldn't walk in them. Took three or four weeks to learn to walk in them, then the new boots came in. I'm sure I couldn't have played pool in those shoes that made me functionally cripple!

When I hadn't played for awhile I found 13mm and bigger tips to be more tolerant of my out of stroke self. When I was in stroke I liked a smaller tip, maybe even a very small 11mm tip, easier to apply precise spin with.

Just what I found for myself. Everyone else may find something different for themselves. The generation before me playing with heavier cues and on the nine and ten foot tables with heavy cloth had no problem at all applying all the spin they wanted with 14mm tips.

I played snooker for a couple years with the small balls and a 13mm tip, that was all I had. Years later I played pool with a 11mm tip and total cue weight of 12 ounces. It gave me a level of precision not obtained with a pool cue with years of play. Later I was able to adapt from that cue to a pool cue and maintain precision.

When making my first post I didn't consider the snooker table "equipment" because I was thinking about my equipment. The snooker table did improve my game in some areas, harmed it in others. I worked up to long rail banks and kicks which is pretty sporty. At the same time planning patterns and safeties and shooting shape on this table did some harm to these things in my pool game. What was a shot to shoot safe on a snooker table might be a very makable shot on a pool table for example.

To get action Lee Trevino would occasionally offer to play 18 holes with a Dr. Pepper bottle against his opponent's set of clubs... said he never lost a match with that bet.

Point being: you are not Parica.

Lou Figueroa
don't play
in Crocs either

Trevino played a lot of gaff games, DP bottle with duct tape on it, a shovel/spade, or just one club. He'd always get a big enough spot to make the game doable for him.

Who said I was comparing myself to Parica? I was responding to straightline's post about not being able to play in flip flops because of height. I'm simply pointing out Parica (who is very short) most likely drilled players in the Philippines (most likely here too) playing in flip flops so his height must not have bothered him much.

Its amazing how a new cue/putter/bowling ball can set off a chain of events inside your dome that makes you play better. Sooner or later(usually sooner) the 'ol clock strikes twelve and our pool game turns back into a pumpkin.

We were also talking about proper support for your feets.

In any case, what works for a champion, whether the issue is height or golf equipment, will probably not work for mere mortals.

I watched a Brit video where a tour player used a basic set from Costco, only had a driver, a couple hybrids and few irons/putter. He shot 1-under with a set that was grossly un-fit for him. Talent/ability rules. Fedor/Filler would SMOKE every member on AZ with a house cue.

While wearing flip flops, shower clogs, Crocs, or bare foot.
