Mechanics Travel Time & Distance

I have been looking for someone in my area to recover & do some repairs to my table. I live in Eastern Ohio about 5 miles from the Ohio River. I have had some recomendations but they have been ,I thought, pretty far away to go to recover one table.

So my question is: how far would a mechanic be willing to travel to do one job. And how much compensation would be required for the extra time & mileage.

If ever there was an application for realkingcobra's certification and locater program this is it. I need a good mechanic because my table was totally butchered last time.

Bob, I don't know what to tell you on this one, as most mechanics I know of, the travel time that most will quote is not with some kind of rule of thumb...ie mileage, time or what ever. I feel that there should be some kind of charge as to the drive time in addition to the work performed. The question here is for you. Lets say the drive time is $1.00 a mile, 150 miles one way, are you willing to pay that as well as the work performed?

I say this because even I have a hard time with how to charge someone long distance for work needed to be done, because in a lot of cases, I can make more money by the hour/job not having to drive so far. Which is why I sometimes try and do some jobs along my route delivering pool tables, because there's no way I'd book a job to be done 500 to 2500 miles away...LOL, hell, you'd be better off buying a new table...LOL

The last time I had it recovered I paid $850 dollars for Simonis 860 and had the cushions replaced with Accu Fast. The distance between here and the dealer is about 50 miles. I agreed to that price, even though I thought it to be high, because my exprience with them to that point
had been very good. They had an excellant mechanic who had worked on my table before and was quite skilled. Well much to my dissapointment, he no longer worked there and they sent a guy that had no clue. Furthermore they refused stand behind the job after he screwed it up.
To answer your question I would pay that much if I knew for certain the job would be done right. But I don't want to get burned again. If you lived 150 miles from here I would pay you that much. I don't think I can handle the mileage from Wash to Ohio.(grin)
