There have been more than a slew of these posts but...

Got a text from a buddy, he's on my APA 9ball team...

text: "this is my last session capt"

me: "ok, I understand"

me: (next day): "you didnt say why? I can guess, but..."

text: "the apa bullsh*t has drained my love for the game."

me: "I understand"

background: Kid has been on my team for a couple years, absolutely LOVES the game. He's a 6. Has steadily improved. He has watched me have to break up/split my team going on 3 times already because all my good friends who also love the game (who are the people I surround myself with, people that love the game) keeping getting better (we love the game, we practice (god forbid)) and it impossible to field a "23" team...

Ive had to send my absolute best friends out on there own and helped them develop there own teams because we can't play together anymore... Its about to happen again. It's sick. I can't tell them to cheat or sandbag so... they are aware, the better they get the less they can play... or the more really terrible players we have to find to counter there high numbers... So if a player goes up, another player has to be "fired" and replaced with a lower number... It's like I mourn everytime I look at the scoresheet and another one of my players goes up in SL. I can't even congratulate them or root for my own friends who I train & play with to get better... I cant even be happy about my own game getting better. QUite the opposite actually.

How sick is that.

I don't blame him.

You have to admit it's a brilliant APA rule if players continue to play! More teams equal more money! In any case, I still believe that the APA is good for people who are just starting out or just like to have a good time.

That's why I really enjoy playing APA that is an in-house league! Where I play at we actually have two 8-ball divisions on Thursday nights. So, when friends have to leave the team, you are still seeing and playing with them every week. And having two divisions a lot of people will play on a team in each and are able to play with friends on both sides who they couldn't fit all on the same team. I believe Weds nights there is the same but with two 9-ball inhouse divisions...

The apa way

Yep,

That is how APA handicaps help to expand the league with more teams and more players - since if you go over the 23 rule, then the team splits in half, and adds more new players to make 2 new teams - its like sanctioned mitosis in order to grow the apa league.
What a beautiful business plan in order to grow the league naturally through improvement of player skills.

This has always been my main gripe about APA(not my only one), since at one time I had split my team apart 5 sessions in a row, in order to play.

Any BCA leagues available in your area???

Or do what we do here in New Orleans when a hurricane is coming our way.

It's the APA way!!!

My current team is considering moving to BCA, so we can play without maximum point handicap restrictions.

That does kinda suck for you and your friends. The good news is that you guys are all good enough that you should be able to play any kind of setting you like, without worrying about handicap.

The other good thing is that you have that many good friends that all play pool. You could have worse problems.
Good luck.

Maybe your area could support a masters division? There are only 4 people on a team (3 matches a night), but everyone can be 7s.

Personally, I love that the APA does this. They groom lower rated players until they have to break up there teams. Players get frustrated the same way that you mentioned above and then these players jump ship over to the BCA and play and grow together for years to come.

I equate it like the APA is the incubator which brings in the very beginners and they raise some of them up and the birdies get to a certain point and they flee the nest on to bigger and better things. Then the birdie's hang with their closest pool friends and grow and progress into great players on the same team in the BCA.

Yep it sucks big time. Our 9 ball team came in first by a large margin. We didn't even need to play the last week to win, but played because we needed 7 points for 1st in all of the Charlotte Metro APA. For some reason the owner of the hall is closing Sundays now so that puts me off the team automatically since they are moving the team to Thursday.

Who knows if I'll play next session, but if I do it will have to be at another hall.

Good one!!

loot homes ?

how would that help ?

lol. j/k man.

HAHAHAHA - very funny one there.

I should get an assist for leaving that one open for you:grin:

When a hurricane is coming there are few options:
1. You can leave for higher ground
2. You can protect your home with bags of sand
3. You can stay and survive through the issues at hand

Sounds like you have three options also.
