The very first time I saw a pool table was at a friends house. We spent about 15 minutes banging balls to kill time. Four years later I was in the Navy, living in the barracks. The barracks had a room with 4 9' tables in it. A friend and I had nothing better to do, so we decided to play on the pool table. He was at one end, and I at the other, and we never got in each others way.
After about 3 hours or so, he shot at a ball, and the cue ball came back to him. We both went "Whoa!!" A light bulb came on, and we then realized that it was possible to control the cueball to get an easier shot. We stayed up all night trying to duplicate a draw shot. We finally figured out you have to hit the cb low. We were hooked after that.
I played in the barracks for years, and then in the bars before I ever set foot in an actual pool room. I didn't even know they existed! And, the first room I actually was in had only ten foot tables, Luther would practice there, and if you talked any louder than a low normal voice, you had to leave. All you heard in there was the click of the balls. Man, I miss that room!
I had just turned 16 and just taken to playing pool on GC 9 footers in a bowling alley. One night my Dad took me to the local Fire House, a real fire station with their own bar area upstairs and one table. I was the only minor there. I was a novelty; the kid protegy that was showin 'em all how it was done. I had a blast and even snuck a couple brews out of the pitchers floating about.
My dad left, not having the heart to pull his undefeated son off the table. He entrusted me to his best friend, Dusty Roads. He was a one of a kind hoot. While there, this very pretty gal, she was at least 32, took an interest in me. The 3 of us went to my dad's friends house where we had more to drink and he got the "all clear" from my dad via a phone call. His work accomplished, he proceeded to pass out on the sofa.
Upon reflection, was this a total set-up? I seriously doubt she was paid for. I mean I was a handsome young man, right? Anyway, she promptly tried to defile me. She did extremely well and if I do say so myself, my steady pocketing continued. It was absolutely fuggin fabulous for this young pup! We spent the night there and Dusty drove me to high school the next morning. I wore the same clothes as the prior night, with plenty of ones stuffed in my pocket, along with a sh1t eatin grin.
It was my passage into manhood!
I was hooked on pool (and women) from then on. Hell, who wouldn't be?
I snuck into the Red, White and Blue poolroom in downtown Dayton when I was 12 years old. There was a crowd around one table watching a money game. I climbed on a window sill to see. I quickly figured out that they were shooting in numerical order and trying to make the highest numbered ball (the nine). I was amazed at how they could control the cue ball and make it roll close to the next ball. I wanted to learn how to do that.
