I would like to commend a group of people in the Chicago area for an event that took place on December 17 2011. A local player by the name of Dennis Adkins decided that he wanted to do something for charity during the holidays and he wanted to tie it in with the game he loved, so he began talking with some of his pool playing buddies about doing a charity tournament. Before long, Pat Bukiri of Pockets Billiard in Crestwood, Illinois had agreed to donate the use of their room for a Saturday tournament and the date was decided.
Dennis and his friends wasted no time beating the bushes for sponsors and with a lot of work, they were able to enlist the following businesses into the cause. From Orland Park, Illinois, Orland Bowl, Papa Joes, Lumes House Of Pancakes, Casas Margarita, Silver Lakes Country Club and R.M Services. From Tinley Park, Illinois, Zappas Hair Salon, Tinley Bowl and White Mountain Golf. From Crestwood, Illinois, Barracos, Awesome Automotive , and Pockets Billiards. And from other suburbs, Red Shoes Billiards of Alsip, Il., Waters Edge Golf Course of Worth, Il., Data Service Solutions of Plainfield, Il. and RPT Transportation of Mchenry, Il. Many individuals, including one known to most pool players, Freddy The Beard Bentivegna also contributed their time and money.
On December 17, 2011, they held their 1st Annual Beat the Hunger Pool Tournament and had a great turn out. With a $20 Entry fee, 50% went to Orland Township Food Pantry and 50% went to the field. Due to the many sponsors, there were plenty of door prizes and raffles as well as Pizza for everyone. When the final numbers were tallied, they were able to raise $3,402.00 for the Orland Park Township Food Pantry and on the December 22, 2011, they delivered 9 pallets of food.
Thanks go to everyone involved for helping the hungry and helping give Pool a good name, especially to the moving force behind the event, Dennis Adkins. I understand that he will be doing it again next year and I imagine sponsors interested in helping could get a head start and contact him at rose.transport@sbcglobal.net .
