Exactly what makes a cue a "Merry Widow"?

I've seen similar cues referred to as "Plain Jane" and "Merry Widow", so what's the difference?

IIRC a merry widow has no points at all. It's a solid or cored forearm to handle to butt sleeve.

But wouldn't that also define a Plain Jane?

You could be right but I the way I knew of a plain Jane is that it could have points and be a sneaky Pete without veneers whereas a merry widow never has any points. I guess the definition isn't really that clear just as a sneaky Pete isn't either...many today aren't too sneaky!

I use the terms interchangebly most of the time. A merry widow with fancy rings (re: Prewitt), would not be a p/j though. But a cue without fancy rings I refer to as either a p/j or merry widow. These don't include sneaky's to me. I've some seen some refer to merry widows as pointed cues without verneers with wraps. Just as anything else in pool, just matters who you ask.
