What do most cuemakers use for metal rings nickle silver, aluminum, or sterling? Is there a difference once the finish is on? Do you cut the rings down closer to size before install? Thanks Doug
I used to use .999 sterling silver and did not cut them until I cut the cue with the router or shaft machine saw. I have not used silver in a while because the price has increased so much.
I use aluminum and cut them with a cutter after the cue has been final tapered with the router. It takes the swirl out and makes them a tad smaller so the finish holds to the material on either side better to reduce finish bubbling. I don't know yet if it works in the long term, but they are uniformly shiny.
