Meucci Oldies Series O-1 wanted

I've seen two OL-1 cues on eBay in the last couple of weeks. One of them didn't have the model number, just said 'Meucci Cue' if I remember right.

Here is a link to one that's currently on eBay: Meucci OL1

Here is one that sold last week on eBay: SOLD OL1 on eBay

They are out there! The OL series were some good playing cues, wish I still had mine. Now...I do note that I'm saying 'OL-1', and the brochures say O-1, I think the original model may have been OL-1, but those still had the 'Meucci Originals' logo on them and that's how I remember them :)

Ohh thank you. This is exactllywhat I have been looking for. It hasan opened hand wrap on it which must have been done afterwards as my old one was not.

A lot of times people would have cuemen sand off the finish over the wraps and put new wraps on. I have seen cues come straight from Meucci though with the wraps exposed back in the day...so it did happen, albeit rarely. Meucci putting a finish over the wrap has been a source of debate for years, some like it...some don't!!

Mike Erwin is a cuemaker that used to work for Meucci for years. If you ever have one that you need restored or refinished, he is the 'go to' man for Meuccis in my humble opinion. He can put a finish over the wrap or leave it exposed, whichever you prefer.

It is not unusual. I have been a Meucci dealer for many years. You could always special order a cue with the exposed wrap, and many more were changed by other cuesmiths for players who preferred the feel of a wrap to the wrapless feel.

Is there any real difference between the O-1 and the OL-1 other than the logo on the buttcap?

I'm assuming it helps pinpoint the date range it was constructed a little better....but is that the only consideration?

I often hear people make the comment that the quality of Meucci's started to drop around the time they moved over to the scripted logo.

I can't honestly say I have ever cut one apart to see if there are differences, but I'd wager there is none. And you are correct, it does help pinpoint the date range.

However, that opens up another source of debate of course. :) I greatly prefer the old pre 1990 Meuccis (before the script logo), and definitely before they started putting dots on their shafts. Honestly, that's probably just me being picky though. Especially when your talking the earlier script logo cues from early and mid 90s.

I have played with the newer Meuccis, like from late 90s and newer, and they just don't "feel" right to me for some reason. Maybe it's all in my mind, it probably is...but I just prefer looking down and seeing the old "meucci originals" on the butt cap.

Call me sentimental...

No real difference between the cues. Mucci's quality control issues came about much later than that. IMO, the real issue was in the quality of woods and the people who did the work. When Mike Erwin retired, it left a big gap in the "know-how" of the crew. There were a lot of other issues at the Sledge, MS plant.

Is Mike Erwin on this forum? I would give him a shot at refinishing some of my collection of Meucci originals!

I don't "think" he is on AZ Meucciman79, but I've made mistakes thinking before??

His website is www.erwincues.com

Rumor was that he even had a bunch of old Meucci parts, etc. at one time. Mike left just around the time they went to the script logo, as a previous poster mentioned this was also the time people say the cues started changing :) I've got an old JR-3 from the second series that I'll be sending him sometime in the next month or two for a refinish, maybe an extra shaft.

I have a OL-1 in 95-98% condition for $500 if you are in the market for an Original meucci. Mike has refinished meucci's for us and I must agree he is my #1 choice.
Good Luck,
Ray

Just spoke to Scott Erwin Mikes son, super nice guy. I am going back home in Mississippi for a visit in late July. We are going to have a family supper. Gee I am glad that I am from the south!

LOL...I hear yah :). I'm from northeast Arkansas myself....

Well It seems I am too late on all these damn auctions or was outbid at last second ont he first one. There are as I have seen two versions of the OL-1, one being an original and the other not. The main difference in the O-1 and OL-1 is the diamond shape. On the O-1 it is a solid diamond as the OL-1 has cut outs in it.
