Meucci Original vs new cue

Okay its opinion time, I want and Original, with the block style emblem. I like them but do they play as well as the new style Meucci? Better? Are they worth money I'll shell out to find a good stick that is 20 years old?

I love them also

Hi. I love Meuccis also. I never owned one with older logo on
it though. Lots of folks on this board bash Meucci sticks, so
just be forewarned. I don't have a complete list of the pros that
used to use them, nor do I know where to find one. I only own
one at the moment, (the 95-17 balabushka style with the nickel
joint) but it looks so fancy that everyone thinks I'm much better
than I am, and it scares off the action. I've been trying to get used
to a low-end McDermott, and it's tough, and I might just have
to go back to the Meucci, since that's what I've used for so long.

I hope some good info comes forth in this post, and good luck
with your hunt for the right one. I watch all the Meucci sticks
on ebay, and there are always a few available with the older
logo. I don't know if you will ever find one that is 100% straight,
and even mine has an extremely slight wobble.

Meucci

I played with a borrowed Meucci that had a Red Dot shaft for about a year and had quite a bit of sucess with it. I found out that I hit better with a more flexible shaft than I do with a low deflection one by using that old Meucci.

The older ones were built more like custom cues and were built more carefully. For example, I have a Meucci "Airplane" cue, which became an Oldie series. It has a real ebony butt sleeve, real ebony points, real abalone inlays, and genuine mother of pearl dots. It's a fine cue built in the early 1980's. Starting with the 95 series, however, they went to black plastic points, pearlescent plastic inlays (which look fake), and black plastic butt sleeve. basically it's a crappy rendition of the original.

If you are going to buy an old Original Meucci, you have to look for a good one. The fine examples are rare but they are good cues.

Check it out, this gentleman will be selling over 30 unplayed Meucci's from the 1980's - just what the doctor ordered:

I own two Meucci's. A 97-12 with a Black Dot shaft and a Meucci Orriginal made in 1975 actually by Bob Meucci. I play with the old one almost every day and I really like the feel of the hit it provides. The newer cues are nice, but I do not like the Black Dot shafts. The newer cue plays great when I put the old shaft on it.

Meucci's are special. I consider myself a novice expert so i'd be happy to talk over a potential purchase with you. At any given time there are about 70 Meucci's up for auction . There are always some good ones . You should review some of the sites that specialize in Meuccis. Decide on a model or models that you want, then go for it. I've bought and sold about 15 Meucci's over the past year. One thing to remember the value of a Meucci wont go down . They are , for the better part, a great stick and even though the cretins on this site knock them, get a good one and you'll love it and be very proud of it.

Okay, the guy you are talking about is selling quite a few sticks, he also said he is going to auction extra shafts, would it be just as good to get an original shaft and put with my new style butt? or should i spend a couple more hundred and get the whole deal?

Aside from the materials used in Meucci cues, the construction methods haven't really changed over the years. The butt and shaft tapers are basically the same as they have always been.

Over time, Bob has changed from using solid wood forearms to synthetic materials on certain models and that, obviously, will change the playablity, as it would with any cuemaker.

The different shafts Meucci offers have the same basic long, whippy, taper. It is a 16-18". Each type has a different playablity theory. The maple and the Red Dot are the same thing except the Red Dot has been tested to find the shafts "sweet spot." The dot is then faced up during the stroke to ensure the same deflection each shot.

The Black Dot is laminated and uses the same idea of facing the dot up when stroking to ensure consistant deflection.

Hope that helps a little.

Sorry you had to make that comment about people who don't like Meuccis. Not too smart.

My first good pool cue was a Meucci HOF-2, purchased with a black dot shaft. After about a year of playing I bought another matched black dot shaft for it.

I used to love the way it plays, but no more, and very rarely use it.

The feel is just not there. Feels kind of dead. It plays alright, but the feel no longer works for me. Perhaps it's the way the shafts are made, perhaps it's the wood, I don't really know.

I now prefer and own three Excalibur sneaky petes, 2 are 19 oz, one is 18.

The feel with those butts (full splice, BTW) is great, and playing with either the shaft that came on the cue, a 13mm, or with a custom shaft Ed Young made for me (tip now is right around 11mm :D ) is superior, IMHO.

One good thing about Meuccis is they hold their value pretty well, and selling them should never be a problem.

Would I sell my Excalibur? Not a chance, it's not about money, it's about the way they feel in my hands and the way they play. And you can't beat the $35 price tag, including shipping and insurance, on those cues, which I bought brand new on eBay. They look alright, very dark rosewood (according to one cuemaker I know) that appears to be ebony.

Flex, I was just puttin' the guys on a little. I love all you people and get a kick out of the remarks made about Meucci's creations. Can't we all just get along ?

If anyone is interested, even Buddy Hall's personal Meucci is for sale or at least was. It was a higher-end Meucci and kind of attractive. I hit some balls with it and could make position shots with it that I could not with my cue. It playe VERY nicely.

If anyone is really interested in it, I will contact the Rifleman for you.

I remember seeing Keith McGready's Meucci on ebay

I remember seeing Keith McGready's Meucci on ebay. It
must have been a year ago. I think it was for sale twice.
The second time it was like $1600 buy-it-now. It was the
"gambler" cue, brought back as the HOF 4.

I guess some folks have that kind of money to spend, just to
say "this cue used to belong to XXX".

I think my favorite is the "city of lights" also known as "the
road agent", but some of them have to much striping in the
rainbow stain. They also made 20 in reversed colors, and
it's known as the "daytime road agent". I like artwork as well
as the concept of a road agent, but hearing about all these
string players scattered around, I doubt I'll ever be able to
become a road agent myself. Nice to think about though.

No problem, man! Just having a bit of fun.

Did you ever see the Meucci cue that someone cut up and attached to a toilet plunger? Now that was funny...

Hey Flex how about posting that picture? I have seen it before but I wanna show it to a friend:D

I tried to find it on several posts here, but was unable to locate it.

Why don't you start a thread asking about the pic?

I have 2 Meuccis. A low end power piston and a gambler 3. Both play great and I prefer either to my predator SP. Muecci gets bashed here often and I have read about quality problems but I love mine.

i also believe that when meucci was making cues with the orginal logo and not the script logo, they had a higher standard of quality control back then.. like Tate said.. they used more quality parts and real woods like ebong instead of the black plastic sleeve they use now.. you really have no idea what type grade wood is under that black or white plastic sleeve..

also.. like i said.. back then in the late 80's and early 90's, there quality control was so much higher and better.. and now the newer cues, you will be hard pressed to get one that doesnt have some flaw in it somewhay or another... everyone i ordered in the last year or so, all had something wrong with it or another..
