Mexico City WorldCup, October 2007

The Mexico City WorldCup is going on right now. I'm not sure, but I think this might be the first WorldCup ever held there. Pedro Piedrabuena, the current USBA Champion, is one of the seeded players (by wildcard). The tournament ends this Sunday.

It looks like all the top seeds are there except for Semih Sayginer. Blomdahl is the favorite as he has won four out of five WorldCups so far this year.

The results from the early qualification rounds are up on the UMB website www.umb.org -- go to Calendar, click on the event, and then click on results.

Perusing the charts for the pre-qualifier, I was a bit surprised to see Jose Paniagua (although he is getting on and I haven't seen of him playing much lately), but I was absolutely amazed to see that Rodolfo Covarrubias is relegated to playing in a pre-qualifier. Isn't there still a qualification round after all these PPPQs? I will be interested in seeing which Mexican players are seeded above him. (Only Rojas and Avila are seeded directly into the main tournament.)

Dani is not doing his best play, but is always a candidate to win.

Yes, he is always a threat to put up a 3+ match. In a single-elimination tournament like a WorldCup, the important thing is to never have a 1.2-average match, since that usually won't win. I see that at Hurgada, Blomdahl had two 1.2something matches in the early rounds, and managed to win the tournament with a 1.469 average, while Dick Jaspers finished in 3rd with a 2.259 average.
