Mezz Cues

At one time I considered an Exceed. So I looked into getting one. Mezzusa got one or two about three years ago then nothing since, AFAIK. J&J was and still might be getting them occasionally. They kept pushing up the price but I persisted.

Then in a conversation with them they told me I could get on a list. Sadly that list is already populated by dealers and hundreds if not thousands of people ahead of me if I had gotten on the list.

That was the point I lost interest in any Exceed pool cue. IMO Mezz was and is manipulating the market on their product, which they are free to do.

Just as I am free to say no thnx to owning an Exceed Cue.

I think Miki has not explained in a good way the whole deal with Exceed cues. It's not in Southwest Cues territory yet, but the production is incredibly limited and the only way to really think about the Exceed web site is as a online gallery of cues they have made and might do short runs of. The Exceed cues I have gotten the last years have been new designs, many of them not featured on the Exceed website.
Honestly I don't think they are exploiting the market, the shortage of mezz and Exceed coincided with the COVID 19 pandemic and my wild speculation is that they probably lost key personnel. Mezz and Exceed is super hot in the Asian, especially the Chinese market, so a lot of cues end up there.

Yes, and they are happy for the 'limited' concept to drive up the price further in China (where the market is very easily influenced). It's what they have been aiming for not just now, but have been doing for quite a while. Having spoken to a lot of people who buy and sell stuff here, it seems that they regularly produce more, and then reduce or limit the run, then the prices of certain stock items go up. People here tend to say 'this cue is the one to buy', 'this shaft is the best version of...' then those prices on the re-sell apps go high. Cp-21 is about 4000rmb more expensive now than it was 2 years ago. Particular runs sell for more than others. They'll produce new things, gauge how they sell, then limit the production to suit. China is their biggest market.
 
Glad I bought my Exceed when I did. It's value has increased based on the offers I'm getting. Never thought I'd ever own anything related to pool that would appreciate...lol

Whine and cry about business practices all you want. Mezz has made a great product and earned the right to reap the rewards. Early adopters rejoice... ;)
 
jjcue.com usually has some. That's where I got my ignite shaft. Brian there is always helpful.
 
I'm a custom guy and hate production cues but I can't praise Mezz enough. It's better than some customs to be honest. I'm waiting for a cue so I bought the cheapest Mezz I could find and bought an EC9. When you screw on the shaft the logo on the shaft aligns perfectly with the logo on the butt. I may have gotten lucky or they all line up. Now if I put a different Mezz shaft that didn't come with the cue than it doesn't align.

I was planning to sell it with two Mezz shafts but I'm thinking about just keeping. The only thing I don't like about Mezz is their design. I think they overdid it and their EC9 are solid. I would consider them grails.

It was one of the longest cues that I had to play with before I figured it all out. Now it ranks up there to one of the best cues I've every shot with.

I know all of its tendencies like there's a little tink/thump sound when you draw. I can replicate that sound and I know I've hit it correctly.

Custom cues are pretty and some play great but some play like crap. The finish on some custom cues is made by hand and is no way near the finish of the high level production cues that uses the same type of finish that is used in the car industry. The costruction is not always greath either, you can see that after a few years when you can acually feel the inlays, rings and the points through the finish. Some even pop through the finish. Some of those nice custom cues don't stay straight after 20 years...
Now all these issue could occur with production cues as well, but then you lose a couple of hundreds and not a couple of thousands.

I have a bunch of cues (over 20), some high end production, some by custom cue makers. I really like pool cues, I consider them to be "functional art" pieces. but to be honest, if I was living in the US where there is a market for cues, I would probably sell them all and keep like 3 cues to play with. And if I was just starting, I would get a nice set of production cues (player, breaker and a jumper) and that's it.

I saw a friend today at the pool hall. He’s been interested in buying a Mezz ExPro shaft matching mine for a while now,He told me he couldn’t find it for sale anywhere. I thought that was odd, mine is nothing special.
I ordered mine from Caroline at MezzUsa a couple years ago.

It is a 30” ExPro shaft with a 3/8 x 10 flat faced joint. Nothing unusual as far as I know. He was polite and insisted he can’t find one like it anywhere.

I thought that was odd so I just searched myself and apparently he is correct,
Mezz is now only offering it in three joint configurations the Mezz ultra, the wavy1 and the wavy2.

Needless to say I was and am surprised to see this change in marketing by Mezz. I guess they want to force the public to use their shafts on their butt/joint configurations.,,

it was originally available in just about any joint, not anymore. To me it’s more questionable business practice by Mezz and seems a bit questionable…

They've made the "business move". If you follow Mezz USA's site then its painfully obvious especially when shafts go on sale. It means another is coming into the market and they no longer support the older shaft with the pin changes. Wavy to Wavy2 for example because I remember seeing a bunch of the wavy's on sale and only for them to come out with the new 2 and I'm assuming its a new joint.

I shoot with a United joint after years of playing with wood joints just to try it. Boy was it stiff and it took me awhile to get use to it.

I was also surprised of how many have sold out on their website when it was plentiful a few years ago.
 
I wanted a mezz but couldn't find what I wanted. That drove me to custom cuemakers. Started with an Andy Gilbert. That in turn caused me to use his standard maple shaft. Not likely I'll go back to any black shaft or composite. Got a runde, barnhart, pierce as well. Their standard shafts are fine. I was caught up in the bs about cf. Now I believe that was a way for manufacturers to rake us over the coals. Custom cuemakers cues have a chance of going up in value. Production cues not so much.

Something magical about Mezz. LOL

It's the best shooting production cue and built very very well. I got their merry widow cue and very happy with it.

I guess it works for them at this time. Long term might be another ball of wax. If their marketing continues to go from one joint to another it’s possible it might affect them negatively.

I for one have lost any interest in Mezz products, but that doesn’t mean others believe Mezz is the holly grail of pool cues.
The same thing happened to me with Dennis Searing.

I was all in on getting one now I could care less….

I had a Mezz set long long time ago. Good cues but no way worth their current price.
