Michigan now smoke free!!!

I'm going to stop posting in this thread after this one, because I know how it will go, and I don't want to get into yet another pissing match over it. Especially with someone (Neil) who I really enjoy reading here.

I will leave you with this. I cannot address "slippery slope". I am not interested in correlating this argument with any other, ie seatbelts, helmets, asbestos, fatty foods, salt... I simply do not wish to breathe carcinogens, and I do not wish to smell like cigarette smoke. When it comes down to it, that's what the argument is. If you want to argue about salt, then by all means do so. Same with seatbelts and helmets. Those things don't affect me when you consume them, or fail to use them.

That is all. I wish you all well, and I hope this issue doesn't stress you out too badly.

Another point everyone seems to avoid is the fact that EVERYWHERE will be non-smoking eventually. People need to adjust. I am sure 100 years ago people complained about indoor toilets and why it is wrong. We adjusted. Smoking establishments will soon be put out of business by higher insurance rates if not legal means. We learned how to poop indoors, we learned how to watch a movie and ride a plane without smoking, people will learn to shoot pool without smoking. We will survive.

Yeah, all you people applauding another stupid new law. Welcome to communist america! First day of the law here in Mi, and in the paper today is an article of how they now want to make it illegal to smoke in your home if you have any pets! New York is trying to ban salt added to foods, as is another state.

You people asked for it, and wanted it... have fun living with the consequences in the future. The America I grew up in is long gone.:frown::mad:

And if your daughter worked in a bar, didn't smoke a day in her life, but developed lung cancer from years of exposure to second hand smoke? I think your opinion might change. Not that unheard of as an example either.

You're right, the government does take a mile to say the least when given an inch, but to let people do harmful things to others like smoke in enclosed environments like restaurants and bars is reasonable? You're protecting something harmful to others in order to defend a principle. Yes, people should be allowed to do what they want, but IN THIS INSTANCE, it's not correct because it's harmful to the health of others. No one said you can't smoke, just do it outside. It may be unfair to you because it's an inconvenience, but it's an even bigger inconvenience to people whose health it negatively affects (which is everyone around you) that doesn't smoke. (As a sidenote, I do think it's stupid that you can't smoke in your own home).

Neil,

While a person may have the right to take a piss, it is not their right to do it on my shoes. Second hand smoke is unhealthy and unsanitary, it infringes on the health and well being of innocent bystanders.

As a former, 20+ year 4+ pack a day smoker, currently on the wagon for over 25 years, I'm probably the worse type of complainer. But I can't stomach the smell of cigarettes reeking from a smoker. I don't think that they even realize, I know that I didn't, how the smell permeates from their pores, stays on their clothes, hair, and ash tray breath....Smokers, Stink.

Seriously, not only the ashtray smell, it's really unhealthy and unsanitary. Please stop for your own and your family's benefit. Not to mention the cost.

i'm against big government and a vast majority of what they do but this is different

sounds like some of you smokers don't like this very much well i got news for ya i don't exactly care for you imposing your nasty habit on myself and others who prefer not to indulge in a cancer causing carcinogen based habit

Totally refuse to get sucked into these any longer. Just dropping in to say congratulations :D It really makes life a lot nicer for nonsmoking players. I remember when the change came here and it was fantastic. Pool became even more enjoyable. If they hadn't changed the law, I might be playing a ball or two worse today because it gets tiring having to fade that cloud of garbage.

I fear that you, like so many others, "just don't get it". First it was seatbelts, then helmets, now smoking. Already they are fixing on smoking in ones own home! Also, now, it's what a restaurant can put in food. It's not so much about smoking as it is about government control of everything.

For you overweight people, it has already begun against you. Do you really want big brother telling you how much you can weigh?? Show me one instance that the gov. wasn't given an inch and didn't take a mile and abuse it. Anyone NOT fighting these laws is on a very slippery slope, and you aren't going to like where it goes. The whole issue has little to do with smoking, a LOT to do with complete government control over your lives. Have fun with that.

I know, and just wait till they they do away with creepy ass handlebar mustaches. You'll have to find another look.

so tell me this..... if there are so many non smokers that are happy with these new laws about non smoking... why didnt any of you step up and open your own pool hall and have it "smoke free?" or sugest it the a current owner? then you wouldnt have to take in 2nd hand smoke. i live in ohio where we are "smoke free" and every bar/pool hall ive been to you see groups of people hanging around the door smoking! and you cant avoid getting the 2nd hand smoke as its everywhere by the door and the smoke rolls into the place and the cigrette buts that lay on the ground is practically the new concrette! so with the new law we have people think their health is safe inside a pool hall without getting cancer when they dont smoke but now we have cigertte butts littering everywhere and big crowds hanging out by the doors. im sure this will stir the pot even more then it is but thats my own oppinion!

I'm not a smoker and hate the smell of it. For me though it was well worth having bars and pool halls allowing it if it ment I had places to play. Pool halls here were crippled because of this. We have lost like 8 pool halls since the smoking ban and who knows how many bars. Something needs to be done or pool may die for good.

Hey, if it helps one person, this post is worth it

This could be a good opportunity to consider the possibility of kicking the habit.

My friend recently quit using the following book to help with the mental side of it, which is the toughest part, especially after you detox:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1402718616

It's worth spending a few minutes reading the reviews, which are overwhelmingly positive.

A used copy of the paperback, shipped, costs less than a pack of smokes.

The book tells you not to even cut back at all until you've read the whole thing, so there's nothing to lose. :)

I'm a non-smoker who believes a buisness owner should be able to decide for himself if his poolroom/bar is smoke-free or not. I used to frequent smoke filled bars and also grew up with both my parents being heavy smokers(they have sinced passed away at 60 and 69 of smoking related ilnesses) I never realized how harmful second hand smoke was until Ohio banned smoking. I was in Michigan over the holidays and went out to a couple of smoke filled bars on a Fri and Sat night. I woke up both mornings with a sinus infection and a bloody nose. I had not been in a smoke filled enviorment since the Ohio smoking ban(2 years) If the Ohio law is ever reversed I would never go back to smoke filled bars/poolrooms. I don't think any non-smokers would.

Give us more laws GIVE us more laws !!!! The owner of any establishment should be allowed to decide after all he forces no one to come through his doors. I do not smoke. It doesn't bother me if you do. It wouldn't bother some but why not pass a law making alcohol illegal too? Drunk drivers kill people all the time, but at least you won't smell like smoke when it happens.

Btw you all benefit from smoke an alcohol. Before you say "no I don't" think about it. How much state and federal tax is collected on these things? Billions of dollars every year. These taxes have to be paid in order to support the economy the state and federal government. Guess what, outlaw tobacco and alcohol and that tax will be passed on to everyone.

But hey pass some more laws. I need someone to make my decisions for me, I don't want to do it. I will be a good little sheep. Is that a CLIFF  oh never mind.:D

my only post on it

I'm an ex smoker. I'll have one every now and then. But even when I smoked, I hated the fact that there were non pool players frequenting the pool-hall and poisoning the walls and bathrooms. I can't imagine ever going back to a room filled with smoke mildew. We are creatures of habit and it will take a long time to reverse them. Its an arduous journey but I feel blessed ,to have overcome the act, and live a healthier lifestyle. Well, that's the plan.

As far as smoking being banned, I'm for it. I realize that it was never really me that smoked. It was the image of the cowboy that smoked in magazines and billboards that smoked. The collection of these images still subconsciously weave in and out my mind, but they are no longer primary codes that move me.

"Mr cool" cowboy got me pretty good..dirty (little kids are the weakest). That's the whole problem, how do we allow all this brain infiltration anyways?

BTW, no billboards in some counties....how strong is that? Was a pretty pleasant drive.

ps, I forgot why i quoted you.
