Hello,

Looking for some opinions on what is a decent desktop mill for cue building. I have looked at the Taig 1019ER desktop mill but I am not sure if it is big enough for the task.

I would prefer a floor standing mill but I do not have the room for one.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Im by no means an expert, but I would rather have my Grizzly benchtop mill than a taig mill, any day of the week. You can get the G0704 mill and not use the stand if you have someplace to put it. Just a thought.

What do you plan on using it for? Are you wanting to cut points? Is is going to be for inlay work? Are you going to use it to build jigs and fixtures out of metal? The things to consider are rigidity, spindle speed, table travel and accuracy. What you intend to use it for will dictate which things are most important.

For the money, the Taig is a nice little CNC mill. I will assume that you intend on the CNC ver. of that machine. That machine is capable if splicing in points or cutting in inlays. I have done both on one. The weak area is the lead nuts. They are made of brass and will have up to .010" in back lash or more. Not a big deal for the spliced points however inlays, you may not be satisfied with your results. Also for an upgrade, you may want to consider a faster spindle. I would choose a Chinese import spindle at the very least. I would also run the machine with a Gecko G540 controller.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Jim.

Thank you for the replies and private messages.

I need to be a bit more clear on what I am looking for.
I am not looking for a cnc mill to do inlay work with, just a decent mill that I can cut v grooves with, make a few jigs and true up point stock with.
I was thinking that a power feed option would also be nice.

Thank you.

Ok, the taig is not for you. Get a good table top mill from grizzly as suggested.

Jim
