Mika needs a new nickname...

I totally agree............

He does well under pressure. Just like the 'Ice Man' in Top Gun. Ice flows through his veins. His winning attitude is the key to this nickname, which I think is well suited.

He won those 2 straight US Opens by making the shots over and over with all the bananas on the line. Tough combos and just flat out tough shots with tough shape. Plus making the right decision is huge to when the going gets tough.

I think the Ice man is very fitting considering what he has done in the last few years or so. He always shows alot of emotion when he's in a tournament also. It was maybe a little more pronounced because their in the poolroom atmosphere. Kind of like being in the trenches.

I think the iceman fits him just fine.

Keep it up Mika. Your silent friend Geno.........

Which decade Scott?

Earl was the 80's
Archer the 90's
Reyes 2000-2009

You said "is" but we really should wait another 7-8 years to see how the other great champions pan out.

Great a player as he is, he's second only to Earl in the number of "episodes" he's had with other players. Not to mention his aura of arrogance that he seems to enjoy projecting. I've often wondered why more people don't speak up about how Immonen treats people.

Anyway, that being said, he is a fearsomely talented champion. And as I said somewhere else, he's my all-time worst player ever.

I have to agree, Terry! There are those that have what's called a "deity complex" and Mika's definitely one of those. Unless one is in his circle of friends, he's not a friendly / approachable person at all -- he treats unfamiliar outsiders like one of the "gray people" (i.e. faceless apparitions in the background that mean nothing to him).

Having said that, his 150-and-out on Mike Sigel at this past 14.1 World Straight Pool Championship in NJ was one of the smoothest, most enjoyable pool performances I had the pleasure of personally witnessing ringside. When he's in the full rhythm of running balls, he's got one of the best paces at the table, short of "Machine Gun" Lou Butera, that I've ever seen. Great player, questionable persona.

I paid for the 14.1 stream on Saturday and I was lucky enough to watch that 150 and out. I thought he was gonna give SVB a run for his money, but 10 ball is Shanes game. It's easier to run a 100 in 14.1 then it is to race to 100 against SVB in 10 ball!;)

I think many here are completely missing the point. Another legend already had that nickname, and the nickname seems to mean he's always cool under the collar. I can see why he doesn't think the name fits.

Think of Raphael Martinez, for example. 100 times less emotional during his matches. You really can't tell if he's steaming or not.

No one here is saying the guy isn't a complete monster on the table. A month from now, playing nine ball, he might beat Shane worse than he just lost.

He's a killer on the table...I like "Icepick" better than these ice cream, etc...jokes that are just because he lost at Shane's best game after battling through the whole field at the 14.1 tourney...which Shane didn't enter.

Just so people don't get the idea I'm some kind of nuthanger, I actually really wanted him to lose to Shane. Love his game, his personality just ain't my cup of tea. I doubt I was the only one who laughed out loud when he was saying Hatch is "too cocky" on a streamed event a few months ago.

Sorry if it's been posted already. I only read the first page. I thought/heard his nickname "Iceman" was because he ran table after table and kept his opponent sitting in the chair getting cold. Yes, no, maybe?

As far as a new nickname. How about "The Wave" since he likes to get mad and wave his hand around after every shot, good or bad.

How about The Human Windmill? Never mind, that's Holland. :D J/K I think he's just a fierce competitor and hates to lose. Not my place to judge the man. He'd whip up on me like a tornado anyway.

Best,
Mike

Mikas nickname should be .....hey dik....who have you played a race to 100 against lately!?

im currently playing a guy a race to 200.

and ive donated every paycheck i get to my poolhall so thats what ive done for pool "this century"

screw mika. If he was more personable than maybe he'd get more respect. U reap what u sow. If he never won anything ever again that would be fine with me.

I was tossing and turning last night trying to figure out how Mika got the nickname "Iceman". History tells us that most people with this name, "Iceman", acquired it because of their ability to maintain composed while at the table, or doing whatever it is they are doing. Larry Hubbart is a prime example of this and rightfully so earned the nickname "Iceman". Reportedly, these people were called this nickname because an observer would have no idea if they were winning or losing by simply observing the person.

No offense to anyone and this is not to bash Mika, but the nickname "Iceman" is simply no fitting for him. It is obvious to tell if he is winning or losing by his demeanor at the table. It is surprising that he has been so successful in tournament pool the way I saw him beat himself up over the last couple of days playing SVB.

So, can anybody think of any new nicknames for Mika?

This is the real "Iceman"....

Well i'm not that fat, so perhaps nicknames are a bit off themark sometimes, Jay said it best "He got iced" but I still have as much respect for him as a player as I did befor the match, SVB is a brick wall in a race to 100. It was only one session against one player. I like his chances to win the us open this year or shane they are my 2 picks. However I'd like to see JA win it and he is playing great right now.

This is exactly the point I'm trying to make!! Thank you for acknowledging it. In no way do I think Mika is not a great champion and player, his nickname simply doesn't fit him anymore.

Someone should take the village people video of "YMCA" and insert all different shots of Mika doing the "Y" during the chorus.
