Milk Dud Tips Question

When we press the Dudley tips, we use a pneumatic press and set the pressure to the same psi each tip. Consistency is key.

Whatever you are doing, don't change it! I've started using your Dudleys and they are awesome!

Hi guys,

I find all this tip alteration stuff fascinating. Here in the UK no-one really uses a process like this. We usually just use a Blue Diamond or Elkmaster tip straight from the retailer and stick it to our ferrule.

I'm keen to try it just to see the results so could someone give me a very quick step by step? This might sound a bit daft but do you actually soak the tips in milk overnight or something like that??? Does the type of milk make a difference?

Also, I'm guessing that the make of tip has a large bearing on the results. What brand tip would you recommend?

Cheers,

Exile

Yesterday I received the tip press from John and I must say the design is OUTSTANDING and a really simple concept. Sometimes simple is better. The quality is outstanding and it will more than meet my requirements.

Any advice for me trying my own milk duds?

I've never done it before so a step by step would be great if any knid sole wishes to pitch in?

First Results

Having played around with the concept and using my new equipment.....

I used a 14mm LePro and soaked it in ??? for 5 days. This was while I was waiting for actual tip press to come in. NOTE: I did sand the top and bottom to get the coating off the tip.

Needless to say the tip was like a bloated whale when I removed it from the ???......

I placed it into the press and torqued it to ??? ft/lbs. I left it for 24 hours in the heat of NM. I pulled it out and it had compressed to almost the original size (minus the dome). I went ahead and put it back in the press and torqued it back up to ??? + 7 ft/lbs for another 24 hours. This didn't really compress it much more than before.

What I will say is the tip did seem harder than normal. More importantly I installed it on one of my Sugartree shafts and played with it today. All I can say is wow. Now that I have my range of torque, I am now going to try different solutions and different tips. Oh what fun it is!!!!

FYI... I highly recommend buying one of John's presses if you want to try doing this yourself........

Day one of my first milk duds

Well i've decided to take the plunge and have a go myself :D

Last night I took 2 Blue diamond tips and put them into a shot glass filled with milk and covered it up (i didnt fancy the smell of 5 day old milk ;) ). I'll keep posting my findings and let you know how its going.

p.s. got some very strange looks from the missus when she discovered the experiment this morning...

Hi Exile, You will find that milk in the UK , Like NZ will not last 5 days like it does in the US. My suggestion is to put a couple of elk tips in a sealed plastic bag with milk. Leave the bag in the fridge.
Then put them into your tip press and let them dry. For me that is a 5 day turn around. Then I put them in the outside shed to dry out and stop smelling . Milk here has no additives or preservatives.
Milk soaked tips are different to play with. Either you will like it or hate it.
Good luck.

Hi Conetip,

Thanks for the info, there seems to be a lot more to this than i first though.

My little shot glass of milk is in the fridge at the moment. My plan is to leave it in there for 3 days then clamp it in the vice for 2 days while it drys out. I'll use 2x 10mm thick steel plates to avoid the vice jaws from chewing my tip up. I will have to use my best judgement on the force used as the only press with a gauge that i have access to is one that we use to cut sheet metal springs and the gauge only measures to the nearest tonne.

I didnt have any elks at the time and was too impatient to wait till i did so i'm using 2 Blue diamond Brunswick tips for this experiment.

Thanks,

Exile

I have a lovely shot glass full of blue milk now.

Only one more night to soak then i can press them over the weekend...so excited :happydance::happydance::happydance:

Anyone got advice for pressing in a vice? How many turns once the jaws make contact with the tip?

cheers,

Exile

I would think about .8 mm shorter than the standard tip height before you soaked it in milk.
I made a press that keepd the original diameter and then squeezes down the thickness.
Then is where the jury is out. Do you make the tip a certain height, or do you compress the tip to a certain density. The choice will be one or the other.
I don't make tip press to sell , but rocket cues on this forum does.
I let my tips dry for quite some time before I install them .
I am not sure if the milk tips are the be all, but thay are not bad either.
Let us know what you find out.

This is the prime reason I decided to do the torque wrench method. This allows me to use the SAME pressure each time. Again I believe repeatability and consistancy is the key.

Progress of my 1st Duds

So, the tips are out of the milk and look to have taken on quite a bit.

Here are some photos of the standard and milk soaked tip. Pre-soaked the tip measured 10.280mm in diameter and 6.310mm in height. After 3 days in milk the tip then measures 10.695mm in diameter and 7.870mm in height. This is an expansion of 0.415mm in diameter and 1.560mm in height.

Also attached are photos of my very crude press. I clamped up the jaws and steel blocks until they just held the tips by themselves then turned the handle on the vice by 3/4 turns. This was the point that i had put enough force to reduce the tip height by 50-60% but felt that any more would be too excessive as i was having to put a bit of weight behind the handle turns and don't want to damage the tips.

I'll leave them to dry out over the weekend or even a few more days if need be then update you with progress again.

Happy shooting,

Exile

who makes the best duds? I'm looking to pick up a few as well as a few elkmasters.

these things are fricking awesome!!!

I've had 3 nights playing with my new milk dud and i love it.

Holds chalk well, NO mushrooming at all and loads of control....

I'm going to start on my next batch tonight so that i have some ready the next time i need one.

The best milk dud's are made from cats milk. Just locate the nearest old lady hermit(cat lady) you all know one. Thing is, its difficult to do...most people have too large fingers and cant draw milk out of the tiny kitty nipples. Try letting your neices and nephews help out next time the family comes over...it'll be a riot:thumbup:

You know you wanna...don't lie...milk a cat, save a cow:rolleyes:

This was too funny.

lol, thats got me laughing

I have never understood this principle. You take a soft tip & compress it to a smaller harder tip & then what? You end up with a harder shorter tip. Why the hell not buy a tip that is already hard, with twice the hight? I just don't get it...JER

i made a few milk duds when i was done i feel i created a new tip.i am going to call this tip a triangle.yes thats it i will call it a triangle.that was my experience.
