Milk Duds?

I've searched a bit on the forums about milk duds and I always see mixed reviews. I found one thread where someone mentioned that you use a Le Pro tip and soak it in heavy cream, then press it in a vice, and let it dry. In the same thread someone else mentioned they used Tequila instead of cream and his tip came out extremely hard. So I tried using an Elkmaster Soft tip, soaked it in Moonshine ( didn't have any Tequila lol ) and pressed it over night. It came out as hard as a Samsara break tip

I've tried a Milk Dud from Mike Johnson before, and it wasn't what I was expecting. It didn't build up to the hype I hear about them.

Any of you guys ever made a Milk Dud that worked well as a playing tip?

Milk Dudds

Try pooldawg8 on this forum. His work. I got some from him
a few weeks back and have been using them ever since.

Exactly right! pooldawg8 has it down pat. He knows how much to press them. Since the work has been done for you, no problems. And at a reasonable price. He uses regular milk, which was the original idea. In ancient times they used water to soak leather to make it harder and actually used it as a form of armor. The thing with the milk is something about the colegens (sp?) in milk make the texture of the leather better. The wetness along with the pressing makes them harder. I don't know if I buy into the milk part, but no matter. Bottom line is that the tips from pooldawg8 play real good.

I not to sure about why people soak any tip in any type of liquid.
As far as I've ever heard, tips should not get wet at all.
I used to press a elkmaster in a vice and my cueguy put it on
with no problems at all. This can be done with any leather tip
and get the same results or better without soaking them in anything.

I'll have to try out his milk duds. I've heard of them (his tips) before, but never tried them.

I can say though, that soaking it in a form of alcohol and pressing it, makes it extremely hard. The moonshine tip sounds like phenolic and breaks as hard too. I wouldn't want it on a playing cue, but it turned an elkmaster soft tip into a powerful break/jump tip.

Soak me in Tequila over night, it will feel like I had my head in a vice too.
I probably won't play well for a week after that as well.

But Dawgs are consistent in dimension so you might want to try one first before you make a final decision.

Just ordered mine from Pooldawg last thursday, Ive heard great things still waiting for them to get to me im guessing tomorrow or tuesday :D great guy to work with cant wait to try out his duds

I forgot that part too. He is a good guy to deal with.

Think of it this way, for the price he sells them for, he isn't making millions.
Hes just happy making a quality product that works well and others enjoy using.

Not like we haven't spent $30 on a piece of chalk or anything.

Dave, don't give up. If your Duds are too hard, you're pressing them too much obviously.

Lots of threads on AZ for making them. A few different techniques. Experiment and find something that works ok for you.

I make my own with tip presses but Dawgs are still nicely shaped and consistent. I use one of his on my Meucci.
That should say something right there.

Used a Jensen milk dud for years. Beautiful solid hit. If your looking for a medium or softer tip, it's not for you.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned my friend Jeff / pooldawg8, for quality milk duds at a reasonable price.

Baileys?
I thought all you north of the border guys just sat around watching ice hockey, singing Oh Canada, and drinking beer.
Rep to Blue Hog for drinking Baileys out of a shoe

Wondering if soaking and pressing a bad Elkmaster results in a playable tip? Many of the Elkmasters I try to install are soft and fuzzy inside.
