Milling points

What spindle speeds do you use when cutting points on a milling machine? Is there any need to get a spindle speeder? The milling machine I'm getting has an R8 spindle, and goes up to 3000 RPM.

Also, any recommendations on what milling cutter to use?

Thanks,
J.D.

Cool looking setups! What RPM do you use when cutting with the milling machine? Thanks, J.D.

It has been my short experience that wood cuts better at faster speeds. You should run your mill's spindle as fast as it can go. Most mills will only go up to around 3000 rpms. If you are using a laminate trimmer you are cutting at 30k rmps. I purchased a special mill from grizzly that has a spindle that will do 5k rpms for my double angle cutter and it works great. Verry clean cuts.

Of course, I always way over do things.

Just my opinion, jimbo.

You will normally use the top speed your mill has on it. I have used the same bit in the mill and in the router to cut point grooves. Running maybe 3000 rpm with the mill and also running 30,000 rpm in the router and both cut fine. You have to watch doing a climb cut at 30,000 rpm as it can start to burn the wood.

Thanks, Chris. As long as 3000 rpms is okay, I guess I'll go ahead and get the milling machine. J.D.

I use a mill/drill, myself, for cutting V-point pockets. Most routers run between 22,000 rpm and 30,000 rpm with most, I would say, around 25,000 when free wheeling. Put on a double edged bit you double the rpm's number of cuts but the router slows a little. So you probably get 22,000 rpm/44,000 cuts. Using a mill and turning at 3,000 rpm and using a 90 deg. dbl/mill cutter with 20 cutters you have 60,000 cuts per minute. Cutting wood with a mill the cutter might slow slightly but, I wouldn't believe, nearly as much as a router let alone a laminate trimmer. I believe a mill also would make smoother, cleaner cuts as the weight of the components eliminates so much of the vibration.
