Minimizing Cue Ball Movement Distance

Whats your thoughts on this one? You hear that in 14.1, you should minimize cue ball movement distance to position on your next shot. I am just a home table banger, but I know (or think I do anyway) what the intent of the saying is, you need precise cue ball control to move through a rack. It seems to me, especially with fast cloth, that the saying isn't exactly right, technically it should be "maximize cue ball accuracy" , and a lot of the time thats not the minimum cue ball distance shot, for instance trying to stop a ball without the cueball hitting a rail, vs using a rail to slow down the cue ball.

I think this is good advice in general, but obviously has to be weighed against other considerations. For instance, I would not hesitate to use the rail to control motion just to 'reduce cue ball movement'.

I think the point of the statement is to try and look at the most 'natural' shape and cue ball movement, without adding unnecessary rails, spin, etc.
 
I think the advice makes perfect sense, but in another sense cause and effect are possibly being reversed here. Less cue ball movement is, it can be argued, a result of superior shot and pattern selection.

And positional accuracy. I routinely target too large an area, and only later realize that just a bit more effort (and a couple more inches of precision) ) would have kept me in line, & saved me a lot of CB travel down the road.
 
i do this in 8 ball as well as 14.1

smallest cue ball movement possible helps position alot for me.
often times hitting the ob ball as full as possible you can use minimal power on the cb and itll stay right where the ob was
when im picking off balls in and around the stack
