Miscue...on purpose?!

I play with a decent player who shoots with the rubber bumper of his cue sometimes to get more draw when the cueball is close to his object ball.

He's convinced the rules allow it. I never bother to point out its illegal, I think its kind of funny to watch.

I think Bert needs to reread the rules. Playing a shot by intentionally miscuing is now considered unsportsmanlike conduct and could result in expulsion from the tournament and forfeiture of all prize money (or maybe something else short of that). The situation in the OP may have been governed by bar rules rather than any written set of rules.
