If the collar on the shaft is larger then the steel joint can it be made smaller by just turning it down on a lathe?

Yes that will do it if it rolls straight together now.--Leonard
I would not recommend it unless you don't mind that the shaft will be shorter. When you turn down the collar you are going to lose length, not to mention diameter. Since the shaft and the butt are tapered by removing part of the collar the diameter will change and the shaft will be smaller than the joint collar, depending upon how much is cut off. You can compensate for this by refinishing the shaft collar and building up the finish if the differance is small.

Ok call me thick headed but I'm not understanding this. Let me put it this way. When I screw the shaft to the butt and run my fingernail over the steel joint and when hit hits the black collar on the shaft there is a little lip.
In other words the diameter of the shaft collar is just slightly bigger then the steel joint collar.So how does this make the shaft shorter if you just remove a few thousandths in diameter?
The confusion started when you didn't use the word 'diameter' in your first post. Some got it, some didn't. No biggie.
To your original question, yes, the diameter of the deco-ring/collar can be reduced in diameter on a lathe to match the joint collar of the cue.
