Mosconi Cup Scores and Individual Records

Scoring the way it counted, by matches:
  • Day 1 -- USA 1, Europe 4
  • Day 2 -- USA 3, Europe 2
  • Day 3 -- USA 1, Europe 4
  • Day 4 -- USA 2, Europe 1
  • Total -- 7-11

Scoring by games rather than matches:
  • Day 1 -- USA 18, Europe 27
  • Day 2 -- USA 21, Europe 23
  • Day 3 -- USA 15, Europe 29
  • Day 4 -- USA 15, Europe 11
  • Total -- 69-90

Individual players' records. For this, I counted a full win or loss for each player in a doubles' match (i.e., not splitting the point into halves), and a win and a loss for everyone in the team match (i.e., not splitting the point into fifths). For each player, the first record is for singles, the second for doubles, the third for the team match, and the fourth is the total. Best record -- Feijen; worst record -- Morris.

1-1, 2-1, 0-1, 3-3.....Archer
1-1, 0-2, 0-1, 1-4.....Dechaine
0-2, 1-2, 0-1, 1-5.....Morris
0-1, 2-1, 0-1, 2-3.....Putnam
2-1, 1-2, 0-1, 3-4.....Van Boening

1-1, 2-1, 1-0, 4-2.....Appleton
2-0, 2-1, 1-0, 5-1.....Feijen
2-0, 1-2, 1-0, 4-2.....Melling
0-1, 3-0, 1-0, 4-1.....Souquet
1-2, 0-2, 1-0, 2-4.....van den Berg

The call on VDB being the weak link panned out pretty well. Only guy on team Europe with a loosing record.

If you count a half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, and one-fifth of a point for each player in the team match, the records were as follows:

Archer: 2 - 1.7
Dechaine: 1 - 2.2
Morris: 0.5 - 3.2
Putnam: 1 - 1.7
Van Boening: 2.5 - 2.2

USA Total: 7 - 11

Appleton: 2.2 - 1.5
Feijen: 3.2 - 0.5
Melling: 2.7 - 1
Souquet: 1.7 - 1
van den Berg: 1.2 - 3

Europe Total: 11 - 7

That is a REALLY good way to do it, it shows exactly what each player contributed to the outcome.

Stats I did while covering Mosconi Cup

Attached is file that shows the stats I did at Mosconi Cup. The individual racks played on day one in the team event were counted as win or loss.

And the other file is the Mosconi Cup points 1/2 point for Team and Doubles events and 1 point for Singles.

Hi, Ricky. Glad to see someone was keeping some stats. Thank you for posting them here. I like your first table (file) showing results for racks played. I don't know whether you are aware of it, but you're missing the number of racks won by Appleton on Day 1 (7?). That gives an inaccurate result for him in the "Totals" category as well.

As for your second table (file), I'm not sure why you would want to credit each player on the winning team for the team match with 1/2 point. That produces an overall result of 12 1/2 to 7 instead of the actual result of 11 to 7. And I don't know what question the 12 1/2 to 7 result would answer. For example, my numbers for each player in post #1 would answer the question: "In how many winning and losing matches was each player involved?" My second set of numbers for each player (post #3) would answer the question "What was the numerical contribution of each player to the final score of 11-7." Did you have something specifically in mind for the way you did it?

Pardon the misspelling of "Mosconi" in the thread title (fat fingers!). I changed it for post #1, but I know of no way to change it in the main thread title.
