We had a round robin event once and it was ok.Problem is at some point there ate players who are still in the event, knowing they cant win due to knowing the other scores.
To me that stops there urge to play their best and is a an excuse for the to dump to their friends.

Still More Play

StillPlayin,
There will always be ways that a person can dump or sell their dump to their friends if that is what they want to do.

What I like about the MMRR is that you get to play more matches and don't have to worry about 2 and out or 1 and out and even if you don't place you had a good day of Pool and that's only part of the reason I think players and room owners should like it.

A good and very organized friend of mine puts on a bi-monthly tourney that could be described with those terms. 8-10 people are divided into two groups by luck of the draw and play everyone once using a pre-printed schedule. After the round robin the format changes to a race-to-3 with 2nd and 3rd in each group playing a cross over match and then the winners play the 1st place players to determine who is in the final match.

It’s an appealing format. The initial draw is not as important as how well you play against all the other participants in determining the outcome and you do get to play everyone involved. Adding to that, there’s less time spent waiting to get on the table which makes it a very enjoyable evening.

Round robin invitation's is the way to go in pro pool for sure. As far as the dumping goes, if you're suspected of it you don't get another invite to play in anymore of them. As long as the promoter feels there was dumping...you're gone. Johnnyt

Sounds pretty good for a small tournament. With 20 or more players I believe it would take too long. johnnyt

Options are Endless

I had to do some real investigation into this and was fortunate enough to help out at a WPBA Regional Tours Event a couple of years ago. I was simply amazed at how well this thing went but truly the devil is in the details and you really have to know what you are doing with the Round Robins and the number of tables.

If I were to do a 2 day event I have intended on Running a Single Elimination End event and promote the higher half of the field to it since Single Elimination doesn't take so long.

I think it can make a great 1 day event too just pay the top few players in each pool or as you said...have a 2nd and 3rd Crossover match and let the winner of that play the winners.

The options are truly endless. It doesn't accommodate as many players as double or single elimination but it makes for a good day at the pool room.

Everyone says that

Johnnyt,
Everyone says that and its possible to set up a situation where you wont get done but if you plan right you can take 10 to 12 tables and 50 players, break them up into separate pools then plan your races knowing everyone plays everyone in the pools and do it that way and you can choose to get done in one day or two days depending on what you want to do.

Round Robins have several big problems that make double elims far superior IMO.

The biggest one for me personally is the lack of intensity.

Exactly, hard to bear down when you can't place, but are stll in the event. Feels truly awkward when you are used to matching up for money or playing standard tournaments. Maybe, somehow it could work within a league format and mentality. IDK.

Luxury,
What I think that MRR has to offer the pool world is this: Players get to play more for the same money and the room gets to keep them occupied more therefore they stay in place longer, don't leave and spend more money.

From the Pool Player Perspective I see it as Less Pool vs. More Pool and I would find a hard time arguing for Less Pool.
