Has anyone ever modified the butt end of a cue to accept a screw in extension? I have been wanting to get a 4" extension for my PureX cues but some only have a butt plug without any threads in the butt end.

I was thinking there might be a way to get a tool that can cut thresds in the butt, but the opening for the bumper plug seems too large to cut threads without making the wall too thin. I know there are threaded inserts that can go in some of the popular cue brands, but I haven't seen any for PureX cues.

I am willing to modify the butt end to accomodate the extension, although I don.t know what is the best way to go about it. Hopefully someone out there has been able to solve this prooblem and can give me some constructive advice on how to modify the cue or where to purchase an insert, plug and 4" extension for PureX cues.

First details on the butt's construction will determine what and if something can be done.

Existing weight bolts can also be an issue, but in general a plug of wood or phenolic is added to be able to thread for the extension bumper.

IMO, not modify butt end is best. I always do make own screw to adapt my cue extension. Nowadays, most of custom cue makers depends on making cue extension for their custom cue using extension kit (screw bumper, and pin male) from China. Even they have to change their original design methodology of making cue to adapt cue extension. Sure they will have to calculate balance point if they could, but most of them not achieve success.
If you're willing to modify, just bore the butt, do plug and do thread. Plug it with hard material for long lasting.

The question is, is it worth the cost of the customization on a cheap cue?
might as well upgrade the cue to one that already have an extension system.

The X10R Slip-On gets really good reviews. Watched a vid on it, you modify the diameter by putting in 3 velcro strips in it.
They have it at PoolDawg for 39 bucks currently.
I've played a guy a lot who has one from Amazon that you tighten on the cue, looks like a real hassle every time he uses it.
 
For inexpensive cues as a do it yourself person I have had no problem just using epoxy to attach a rear cue extension bumper to several cues.

It has worked just fine - for more expensive cues I have handed it off to the cue maker to do the threaded route.

The Meucci 95 series has threads behind the original rubber bumper that accept some threaded extension bumpers and usually you can avoid a weight bolt change.

Yes, I understand the thoughts about modifying a cheaper cue for an extensin, but when you feel comfortable with a specific cue, you want to keep it current. Even with my two Cuetecs that are legacy cues, which I use regularly, they don't have any threads in the butt end, so in this situation I will probably have to put in a solid plug and somehow cut threads in for a screw in insert. My biggest issue is that I don't have a lathe. I know that there are threaded inserts for screw in bumpers that accept extensions, although for my Cuetecs I want only a 4" extension and there are only 6" and above available commercially, otherwise i have to have one custom made.
 
The X10r is fantastic if you want a slip on extension. Very easy to cut down if you don’t want the full size.
 
Some are easier than others. On cues with the buttcap held on with a bolt, extra steps are needed.
