monday night league incident

In the APA league I'm in, we have a no cell phone call rule. Meaning if you answer your cell phone its a foul. Why?

Some guy who was a SL 4 or 5, would have a friend call him up right as his match was starting, and he would use his handsfree ear piece, and had a friend who was a good shooter, sit a couple tables away, and give him advice on how to shoot each shot, and what to do everytime he got to the table.

Wow, that cellphone coaching is about the lowest of low I've heard in APA. The league is meant for fun and improvement, but some people think winning is everything. I'd rather take a good loss and know what mistakes I may have made, what things I did good, and what I'll need to work on.

Xidica,

Yea it was pretty low, the first session i played APA, everyone i knew told me about the guy and pointed him out from the get go. And the funny part is now, he is a very weak SL4 and can barely run 3 balls in a row.

The guy usta be a solid SL5, and he would play SL4's and 5's and sometimes even 6's and could beat them pretty easily, when he was cheating.

Anyways, i've seen alot of people try sharking during thier APA match, and its i guess funny, when people try to do anything to get the win.

The first session i played 8ball, the team i was on, gets into the playoffs, and during my match one of the guys on the other team who is notorious for doing his sharking moves, makes a comment about betting 20$ right after i had won the game we finished which made it Hill-hill.

I looked at the guy and said, i do believe gambling during a APA match is cause for a loss of match. And no joke his jaw dropped and he turned white and then just apologize for it, for the next 10mins lol.

exactly, they didn't believe us about touch fouls and even after we showed them the league rules they still didn't think it should be called

Not one single person in our 16 team league would argue with a ball in hand foul by touching or tapping while addressing the cue ball.

Yup, that's pretty shady and I, personally, wouldn't tolerate it... I'd take a deal of them crawfish and drill that ol' player in the ass...

Folsom Prison rules?

In a way, I hate to say it, but this whole thread is about why I've not played in any leagues, though I've been asked several times. Since we moved to SC, I've seen an awful lot of rediculous stuff concerning leagues, but the cell phone thing takes the cake. Sounds like something some of the lower road weasels would pull.

True, all sorts of weird stuff can happen in leagues - ANY league. Not just pool.

But such things are not more or less prevalent in any given league (APA, BCA, etc) than any other, just because of what league it is.

Such things happen because of the *people* involved. If you've got a higher sketchy-to-non-sketchy player ratio in your area, yeah its going to happen more often.

Don't avoid a local group in a national league type because of what happens in that league in OTHER areas. Judge your local group on its own merits (or lack thereof).

Last week in our league there was a new girl playing. She and her boyfriend were teammates and they were all over each other. They were playing their match against another team while my team played on the next tables over. I was waiting to break while she was shooting. She ended up with a long tough cut on a ball and called a timeout. Her boyfriend went on to wet his finger and mark the rail in the spot where she should aim. A guy on the opposing team said something to the boyfriend, who just laughed and shrugged it off. Sure enough she made the shot and then sunk the 9 to get out. If you're just there for a night out with friends that's one thing. But if it's a money league that type of stuff cannot be allowed.

Agree...

An add on to that is that this kind of unsportsmanlike behavior also happens in local tournaments, recreactional games, and especially when gambling on games (tournament or non-tournament). As you stated, it's a reflection of the *people* involved. To try to avoid all such interactions, would be to avoid all forms of competitive play (sanctioned or non-sanctioned). Of course, anytime there is something on the line, then there is going to be a higher likelihood of poor behavior. Unfortunately, it's just one aspect of human nature.

The only way to avoid such antics is either to never play against another person, or else to ensure that no matter what happens, you just simply won't care or let it affect you in any way (i.e. if you were playing against your own kid or some other child, you may not care so much, no matter what antics they do).

Tap tap tap :)

My feelings precisely.

I *rarely* let someone else's actions/antics get to me. My best playing time is when I'm just stone-faced, focused on my game and not my opponent's game, nor his/her actions while playing.

Some people are better than others at putting on those mental blinders. By no means am I the best at it - but I know quite a few players who are like exposed nerves - the least little thing going on around them just goes right into their brain and yells "HELLOOOOOOO!!!!!".

And that's why

after awhile, better players don't like to play with bangers. The people that haven't developed the skill try to 'fudge' whenever they can. Nobody likes getting beat ALL THE TIME.

Leagues are a hassle, and one of the reasons I haven't played in one for 2 1/2 years. Teams that aren't good enough, try to fudge forward, and teams that are good enough have to sandbag just right ... lol

not really the case for all

Do not let a bad experience color your view of all leagues and all teams! I have played with several teams some great and some sucked and I do not mean as far as talent I mean as far as enjoying league play! My advice is before joining a team and or league talk to several folks from the team and from others in the particular league operators group / division and that way you will get a feel for both how the team captain runs his team (very important! since some are real Aholes only concerned with winning!) and also the league operators involvement and how he or she runs the league !( important also since some try to make it fun and some only look at it as a business!) As a bonus you will learn what other teams think of both your prospective team and the L.O. !!! :)
