Ronnie O'sullivan says:

Because, you know what, there should be no money in this game. There should be no fame in this game. They should take TV away from this game. They should take it away. This is like a ****ing”—O’Sullivan hesitated, grasping for a word of sufficient violence—“an eccentric sport.”

This confirms the following perceptions;
1. Ronnie O'Sullivan, like most naturally talented players, is as crazy as a sh*thouse rat.

Yes I'm crazy, No you can't have some<-------ColoneI

What he means is that its not for the masses. To accept the life long journey of a cue sport, which is infinite, is akin to a path of enlightenment or elevated existence. To always, no matter how good you get, know you're not as good as you can be, and never will, but still continue on anyway...that's a special kind of torment...and one some wouldn't wish opon their worst enemy. Ronnie apparently doesn't wish this for his boy.

Agreed. Would O'Sullivan have said that when he was up-and-coming?
F*&# no!!!

He probably yaps at the mouth because he has made money in pool already.

But, but,...RONNIE said it! It MUST be true! Who are we to question the likes of RONNIE?

Easy for him to say, having cashed in in a major way.

Methinks he forgot where he been.

Perspective, baby. Its all rooted in where ya comin from.

Exactly . Ronnie is one of my favorites but he is talking like the billionaire who says money is not important . Or the tertiary graduate who tells the young kid that higher education is unnecessary .

The way I see it is there should be money in pool if the market so dictates. These days the market has not seen it that way so there isn't. In that sense there shouldn't be.

There are a lot of activities that some subset of the population loves to pursue that doesn't provide a living for a professional. That's just the way it is. I sure don't believe there should be money in it "just because".

Why there's no money in pool is anyone's guess. No one plays it anymore, it's boring to watch, even those who play the game would rather watch something besides pool, it hasn't been marketed right, there's no organization, yada yada... I sure don't have the answer(s) to this question. But the way it stands now there's simply not enough demand for the professional game to support more than a few that want to play it for a living and no one is making big money playing it.

I think it takes a certain kind of person to enjoy cue sports. To watch unless you know what it takes to shoot at that level is like trying to watch paint dry for some. These pros make eight and nine ball look effortless. Never missing a ball. Dry breaks are the deciding factor of the winner sometimes.

I hate to bring up the name but Bonus Ball was on the right track to get the game headed in the right direction. I think they fired off with less backing/ducks in a row then they should of had. But the game was interesting. There was great action. Plenty of drama. I think it had the right recipe to be a big hit to main stream audience if it got the that market.

BTW Ronnie O is a nit if thinks he not playing for the money.

The Greatness of Pool

What he means is that its not for the masses. To accept the life long journey of a cue sport, which is infinite, is akin to a path of enlightenment or elevated existence. To always, no matter how good you get, know you're not as good as you can be, and never will, but still continue on anyway...that's a special kind of torment...and one some wouldn't wish opon their worst enemy. Chess is a similar sport. Bobby Fischer wasnt wrapped too tightly himself and many others who play the game obsess over books and minute details involving the addition or subtraction of one move in a whole Methodology of play that makes it yet another complete nameable thought on play. The variations becoming endless as the number of possible shots in pool.

My thoughts are that Pool and similar sports are best kept in a context and a great way to add spice to life but will likely only rise to a certain point of greatness.

The greatness is only measured by the greatness of the state of the game itself which at this time is lacking unfortunately. Pool it seems is like herding cats with most cats in it strictly for what they can manage to squeeze out of it rather than to foster the good that it can do.

The stress it can relieve, the friends that can be made, the social aspects of the game havent been properly worked into a cohesive Pool Culture that is beneficial for the good of mankind. Instead its been about Hustlers, Smoky Pool Rooms, doing anything and everything in order to gain an edge ...which is akin to cheating a lot of times and has become an eyesore to the General Public.

Something has to happen to motivate people to bless having their Sons and Daughters learn the game and restore some dignity to it and its not just happening on its own.

The answer who knows but we are a organization with no organization and thats the problem.

Everybody wants a trophy. What's that supposed to mean, you did something? I don't need a trophy or award or recognition. I do this sh!t because I love to do this sh!t. Take money away from pool, and the only people that will remain are the ones that play merely for the love of the game itself. Not for money. Not for fame. Not for TV audiences or corporate sponsors. It's a personal path, it's all up to you, therefore only you can judge yourself at the end. Sound familiar? Pool is eccentric...a gentlemen's game. Unfortunately, there aren't many of them around anymore. And that's why the game is almost gone.

Just about every major sport improved by combining leagues that not only fractured spectators, but fractured support as well. Doesn't help that half the time the game is just downright boring. Remember the ruckus that was caused by Tiger fans being loud? Autzen stadium in Eugene.. loud. Seahawks.. loud. Give people something to get into. As for the 'scandal'.. every sport has it. People do it more in pool and other games because of the lack of reason not to.. $$.

Imagine trying to give a damn about baseball with 10 different leagues.

There are a few other things, but those are more relevant to the previous responses.

Just about every sport is currently looking for global revenue because numbers are falling for all of them in the US. A lot of dynamic reasons why...changing atmospheres to just sum it up simply.

But the point I think you're missing, Banks, is that no sport, no game was originally intended be a career, a job, or a money making machine. They are games, and those other things are for work. We've turned fun and games into businesses and then wonder why no one's interested...or can afford them anymore.

I understand games produce no real value, but what i am saying is that there is enough money moving around in pool that could result in something larger.
