Money Players/Tournament Players

Any stories on Jeanette Lee, if and when she gambles/ gambled??
How did she fare???
Entertain me...hehe

Sarah, I, like so many others, was deeply saddened at the death of Laurie Shampo. She, like Belinda, had a ton of heart.

Belinda's presence at the table was enough to scare off most short-stops. Forgetting the obvious differences. Her stance, stroke and fierce competitiveness reminded you of Mike Sigel. You tell me if I'm right or not.

Green Guy, how are ya? Believe me when I tell you this. Belinda's road name use to be "Miss America". How many ball-bangers do you think would post their $20 per game just to be at the same table with her? Another of those rhetorical questions. MANY.

Like I said, many of the short-stops could recognize what a stroke she had and wouldn't play. But, the power drinkers that couldn't recognize their mothers would run over each other to get to the table. And, she always made them like it. The smile, the twinkle in her eyes. Hell, she made a ton more money than I did.

P.S. And yea, she's left handed. Like Sigel, LOL

The best example of one of the greatest tournament players on earth who is probly the most horrible gambler at pool I've ever seen is none other than.....Earl Strickland. He had enough brains to stop gambling cause he was sick of losing at it.

The only time I know of Earl gambling was when he played Morro a 10-ahead set in Vegas for $20k (pretty sure that was the bet). This had to be at least 10 years ago. Earl gave Morro the 8 and beat him 10-ahead in something like 3 hours. I don't know about how he usually played for the dough, but he played pretty good that day! Shortly afterward, Earl came to L.A. to play Morro the same game at Hard Times. Earl got there the day they were supposed to play to warm up for a while. His stakehorse never showed up, and Earl ended up PRACTICING for something like 36 hours.

...Keith didn't care wheather he won the tournament because there was a good chance he was going to get the cash anyway...

Ahh, but how long would he keep it?!

Piglit, you sound like there is something wrong with keeping the money in action. If Keith or any other player with heart put every dime he won in the bank it wouldn't be long before no one would gamble with him. I'm sure you don't expect Keith or any other player to win every time out. Again, no more action. Amarillo Slim was probably the best poker player of all time. You don't really think he booked nothing but winners.

How long will Keith keep it? Until he books a loser. Just like any other money player. All anyone can hope for is to book more winners than losers.

Staying in action is a good thing.

And, to add:

I he goes bust one night, The Earthquake will be right back next night.

just a comment on the drugs thing

Back in the 70's and 80's when my dad was hustling pool he would take speed to stay awake, sometimes staying up 2 or 3 days playing pool.

He swears to this day that something about the drugs made him play better, he would just get in the zone and run rack after rack playing for $100-$500 a game.

he still shoots good without the speed, about 2 years ago(the last time he played)he played a road player that walked into a local bar for $200 a game and beat him 5 out of 8 games.

Jimmy M:
Kinda says alot when you say the only time you heard of him gambling doesn't it? Trust me and ask around how much of a sucker he was matching up. Even when he had a great game giving up a ton of weight he just couln't handle it, whining and crying like a baby that people should just play even, LOL.

Damn, Mike Carella came in the Rack and gave Superfly (couldn't play a lick) 45-5 playing one-pocket and ROBBED him, not a typo 45-5. Now years later Earl comes in and CAN'T give him 11-5 cause he's just too weak hearted with the spots.

Now don't get me wrong about Earl, I like him alot even tho he's lets say different, just can't match-up good...........as a matter of fact we tried getting him in action about a year ago and he doesn't even know it. We talked to one of the guys around here in Detroit and he would have put up 100,000 and have him play Alex 20 ahead even but nothing happened. On the flip side, we wouldn't bet on him playing a guy around here named Paul giving something like 9-6 (Slivka gave him 10-5 and it was a heist and Alex will give him more than that) cause he might impode. It's all in the head.

Catfishcody:

About the simplest thing I can say about the drug thing and it'll always be true............they make it ALLRIGHT, that everythings NOT allright.

And I mean ALL types of drugs.....beer, liquor, weed, pills, whatever. Anything to mask what you're really feeling inside, what's wrong with being nervous or excited or upset or down or up or whatever.............GOD what a feeling. Makes us stronger people inside. Why people want to cover it up is another story.

I hope people really don't pull the wool over their own eyes about how prevalent any kind of drug use still is in pool! It's still a reflection of our society and last I looked our society is pretty deep in it.

I recently hooked up with Jimmy Reid and took lessons in Nashville, TN. If anyone doesn't know Jimmy, he was the 1985 US Open Champion, among other big tournaments he won in that timeframe. He teaches a lot now. Nice guy, excellent teacher, and apparently had and still has a lot of gamble. Anyone have any stories?

If I lost getting 45-5 against anyone, there would be noone coming back to play me years later because I would have quit playing pool! ;)

I'm with you Jimmy!! I've never even heard of a spot like that before!! I saw Efren giving up 13 to 3 but 45 to 5? Geez, that's unbeleivable!!

I'll go out on a limb..........I will take 45-5 playin some one hole! You pick the Champion.....lol! Anybody but Keith.....cause he might really get up there and play! lmao! And beat me! Biggest spot I seen in onepocket was 18-6! But after awhile it gets stupid having to spot so many balls!

i saw a player out of kentucky give up 20 -2 and all you had to do was bank'em clean to your hole.....juston coleman

Anybody know Doug James? He gave me 9-7 and my fouls didn't count! And made me post 3 games.....lol! Didn't take me long to figure out all I had to do was lag the cue ball to the other end a few times.......and eventually the guy is gonna sell out. Then lag back down there again LOL! I guess he didn't think I'd ever heard of onepocket. He played pretty good but.......at the time the game woulda been close 9-7 with my fouls counting.

Matt:

LOL, 1st thing that came to my mind about Jimmy Reid LOL.

If anybody doesn't know Jimmy then they have to know he was quite a ladies man. Always a different girl all the time.

Somebody asked him why he was always dumping them and getting new ones............he tells us he never wanted them to get real smart on him so he would put an orange and a five ball on the dresser and when they could tell the difference......it was time for them to go!

As far as outrageous spots, how would you like to spot a guy on the snooker table..........put the 2,3,4,5 in the jaws of pockets and the 6 and 7 on their spots and give him ball in hand and the 1st shot..........................he never, ever, ever won and lost thousands and thousands at it. Even got points on the wire at it.

Watched Keith win 5K on a Friday at Hardtimes and Sun AM he was outside of Hardtimes bumming smokes! Hardtimes was too close to Alamitos Racetrack. During those times he didn't about anything except the "action". He didn't really attache any importance to anything. No excuses ever.

How are ya Gerald? Such is the nature of the beast of gambling. You can never really enjoy being at the top unless you have been at the bottom.

Big time gambling is not for everyone. Most people, in the same given cirmumstances that you cite, would have no hope of pumping back up in the next few days. As bad as I played, compaired to Keith, if I were in the same situation (and I have been) I had hundreds of phone #s I could call and say, "got any spots for me?"

Remember, Keith McCready was the greatest bar table player on the planet for many years. Imagine how many phone #s Keith could/can call. The thousands of gambling pool players all over the country are like an extended family that will gamble with and against you. Any one of these players, not just Keith, can get help from another player that he knows. Not a hand-out but get staked to play someone else

Like I said, it's not for everyone but for me it was the most fun I have ever had. Meeting new people with similar interests as you and the early AM breakfasts, rehashing old war stories.

I used to watch guys playing pool all night for money. They'd go outside and pitch quarters for a while, and the money would usually change hands, and then go back into the pool hall and match up again on the pool table. I used to love to watch the action. I was never really tempted to be part of it because I was raising a family, but I loved watching it. My kids are grown now and If I could ever get the time to devote more to pool, I might just get out there and test the waters. The big thing holding me back is being able to play with the pressure. I may not be able to handle it but I'd like to give it a try before the lights go out.
