Last year, and again this year I saw an advertisement for a $25,000.00 added Montana State 8 Ball Bar Box Tournament in Lewistown Montana.

Having interviewed in Lewistown many years ago for a job. I believe Lewistown is a town of what 6,500-to many 7,500 people, West of Billing, and North of Livingston right in the middle of the State of Montana.

My question is how they raise the add money in the middle of no where?, and what is Summit Gaming? who appears to be a major sponsor, who is mention in the below ad copy for the tournament.

As it appear from Summit Gaming web-site they are a supplier of video gaming machines. No mention of a Pool connection?

First of all, this is the annual Montana State Tournament. The tournament has been held all over the state, but in Lewistown for the past several years. It happens every year, and is sponsored and funded by the vendors that own the pool tables in towns across the state. Summit Gaming is a company that owns a majority of the video poker/keno machines (and coincidentally the pool tables, juke boxes, etc), which is how they can add $25K. You can't "buy" your way into the tourney. You have to 'win' a qualifier. They have local qualifiers every week, in towns across MT, and then the weekly winners play off for a spot at the state tournament (top two in the finals advance to state). All matches are played on 7' barboxes, at $1 a game, so that adds up too, with over 300 players at the state tourney. I don't know if it's still the same way, but a few years ago, the organizers would run the calcutta, and BUY most of the top players (which is to me is a conflict of interest, since they can outbid anybody :mad: ). The tournament usually pays about $1000-$1200 for first place.

What is a calcutta?
