I agree, one's own judgment needs to be used when reading a post. You can't put too much value in the reps. Its just the same in real life.
A person who has a great sense of humor and is always making people laugh, might not be the best one to listen to for advice on the sound that your car is making.
If someone says something with conviction in person, the human tendency is to believe it. You can't always believe something without taking some time to double check for yourself. What you take for granted today, you might find out tomorrow to be completely false.
The concerns over the rep points are valid and I appreciate the criticism that was expressed. On the other hand, the "greenies" can't be taken too seriously. I like seeing a rep come in because that means, simply, that someone enjoyed a post. On the other hand, if a post doesn't get a rep, that doesn't mean that no one enjoyed it.
Reps are meant to be given for any reason that the reader chooses, which I am paraphrasing from somewhere, although I couldn't find it just now in the FAQ. Often they are given out for humorous posts, which I think is just fine. Its just gives the reader an easy way to say thanks.
If I made someone laugh and slightly brighten their day, that doesn't necessarily mean that I know how to aim a masse shot, or what a double hit sounds like.
As a poster, we should try to post responsibly, but as a reader, well, let the reader beware. JMHO.
