Mosconi cue? How would you verify?

Recently I struck up friendship with an old coot (he's 75) who once owned a small pool room in Philly. He claims he has a couple of cues given to him by Willie Mosconi, and says I can take a look at them sometime soon.

Short of a signed document or some such, how would I go about trying to verify the history of such a cue?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I just bet that if he heard that you had referred to him as an "old coot" he would have second thoughts about showing you anything but his middle finger.

He sounds to me like an old gentleman to have been so nice to you.

He just said that he had a couple of cues that were given to him by Willie. He did not say what brand of cues they were so what is there to verify - whether he is telling the truth, or not?

Another Old Coot who can spot a smart A$$ when he sees one,

unless its a rambow with willies name written in it or the guy has pics of him, willie and the cue. even at that might be a hoppe pro that only about a million were made. odds are it will be pretty hard.

I'm 60 years old myself and have no intention of apologizing for anything I said. I'd call him an old coot to his face and he'd laugh about it.

Some people have a better sense of humor than others. And by the way, thanks for your super informative post. Wanna take a crack at my question next time, please? Or else go away?

You are correct - I don't think it is funny to call an older person an "old coot". Having fun at another person's expense is not humorous - it is rude.

As to the original question; there is no way to verify that the cues were given to the older gentleman by Willie. By you asking the question it is obvious that you have cast aspersions on his character.

I would have accepted it as the truth and said something to the effect of "that's great".

I'd say your goal is hopeless, since you are 60, you should
remember that, prior to 'The Color of Money' collecting cues
was an area of interest to only a handful of people.

Prior to 'The Hustler', only a small percentage of players even had
personal cues - and the interest was only about using
them to whack balls.

There are stories about Willie receiving many cues from cuemakers,
but he didn't care anything about them.
His playing cue, the one he ran the 526 with was a Rambow. Owned
by the Glenn family, last time I heard.

So, being able to independently establish ownership by Willie, would
seem to be highly unlikely.

Why don't you wait until you see the cues, then ask the gentleman if there anyway to verify who gave him the cues. Since it would add more value to the cues.

you really Arnot kidding are you??

Sorry for jumping in this thread. At first I thought your reprimand was sarcastic but now I see you really took offense at his original post.
That's ridiculous!!!

"old" coot - Informal. a foolish or crotchety person, esp. one who is old.

Maybe his friend is all of these things. It's mighty presumptuous and kinda silly to take offense at something like that IMHOhttp://forums.azbilliards.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Willie's Cues

I read your comment and you said this fellow was going to show you these cues, didn't mention selling them to you.

So why would you even care if they can be verified as belonging to Willie Mosconi.

If this fellow at one time owned a pool hall, I would tend to smile and believe him. He probably has a lot of great stories :)

I have heard from sources here on AZ that Willie Mosconi did recieve a lot of cues from cuemakers and different companies that would have liked him to play with their cue. I guess he had a closet full of them.

But I do know he played with his Rambow ;)
