Has anyone commented on the tremendously sad statement that Matchroom in effect made about American professional pool when they used only 5 events as the MC qualifier and all in the USA? Not a single world event. It is pretty much Matchroom stating that the USA no longer has a professional pressence on the world stage enough to justify them having ranking points allocated in those events for the Mosconi Cup.
IMO Matchroom really needs to consider making the Mosconi Cup Team North America vs Team Europe so that players like Alex, John Morra and Jason Klatt would be available to the American side. The USA is already handicapped by their single country taking on the whole of Europe, Team USA needs to become Team America and that could very likely change things very quickly. Put SVB and Alex on the same team and lets see how Team Europe likes that?
Plus, Alex in the Mosconi Cup with his antics and personality... think about that!
Hi Celtic, hi y'all
"The Mosconi Cup is an annual nine-ball pool tournament contested between teams representing Europe and the USA since 1994. The trophy is named after American player Willie Mosconi, and is modelled on and compared to the Ryder Cup in golf."
The Ryder Cup has been a competition between the US and UK golfers. Later on other golfers in Europe were picks to represent not only the UK but Europe >> Wikipedia... The Mosconi Cup "is modelled on and compared to the Ryder Cup in golf". Obviously this comparison has been made in 1994 and not in 1926. So the only chance I see for Canadien players in a North American team is that the Ryder Cup changes its rules first
The reason why Matchroom has only been chosing 5 events IN the US but not any abroad is the fact - which has been mentioned earlier in this thread - that 1. there aren't more high class events in the USA planned for 2012 and 2. Only Shane van Boening usully puts his behind in a plane to challenge the rest of the world!
The US is a country of 50 states, a population of over 300mio and probably around 1mio pool players (league players included)
Europe has approx. 50 states, a population of over 700mio and probably around 100'000 pool players. The biggest amount of players is in Germany with around 40-45'000 players.
So we have the same amount of states; Europe has the double amount of population; the US has about 10times more pool players! I don't really see the handicap here
Best wishes
Marco
ps: when the US won the Mosconi Cup for the 6th time in a row Matchroom should have added the Philippines or Taiwan to Europe's side huh?!
