IMO there is a difference in a "coach" and a captain.A coach basically teaches and develops players into great players. The guys on our USA team already are great players, but the role of captain is someone to oversee details and make the roster of matches. Mark did a great job in matching up the players. I once heard Shannon Daulton say "pressure bust pipes I don't care who you are". A very true statement! Shane had so much pressure on him to play at his highest level every match. All the others were expected to do the same. That venue they were playing in was the most pressure packed place that a player could be in. The fans over there are truly horrible. I know there are a few exceptions, but fo the most part they are rude and crude and will stop at nothing to distract our players. I watched and every time the Euros were shooting you could have heard a pin drop. Not the same for our side! This is where the role of captain comes iin to play. To try their best to settle down our guys. I remember in a match in 2012 between Johnny Archer and Nick the Greek someone even went so far as to say something derogotory about Melanie Archer! Johnny came unglued and pointed his finger at the guy and told him you can say what you want about me but do NOT talk about my wife! I saw CJ reach out to Johnny and try his best to settle him down. I feel that a captain is needed just for things such as this.
