Mosconi Cup Thread

What is "RP," Countess Dracula? :confused:

The way I look at it, I wish the Asian-Pacific Islanders well competing on their tours. By them being over there, it enhances my chances of seeing my horse in the winner's circle here in the States! :D

It is interesting that the lovely Japanese player, Miyuki Sakai, seeks opportunities to compete here in the States. The women's pool in the Asian countries must not provide as many tournaments to the lady champions as in the U.S. and Canada. Their loss is our gain, and the recent Korean player who won the big WPBA event is a good example of the diversity in American pool.

Team USA being the Mosconi Cup winners speaks well about our status on an international scale (IMO). Man, it sure was thrilling to see it unfold. :)

JAM

hi jam,

mikko already answered your query on RP.

thank you for your well wishes for the pacific island players; by them being over here i thought it increases the chance you'll miss efren, busti and the rest! ;) :D

it's a win-win situation for the asian lady players and american pool afficionados that they get opportunities there in us.

yup 2004 mosconi is even an addition to the already tall stature us pool players have. can't wait to have some sort of a world cup! maybe there's more challenge the rest can offer. ;)

I sure do miss seeing Efren, Bustie, Alex, and the rest of the Filippino crew, but I understand their desire to compete closer to home. There seems to be more opportunities to play in lucrative tours/tournaments, without the burden of travel expenses. But, hey, we still got Jose Parica, who was the very first WPC champ AND who led the Filippino Invasion, and Santos! ;)

How about Santos winning the World Summit in NYC! He ALWAYS seems to cash in every tournament he plays in, and he finally scored a big one!

I'm sure glad the Mosconi Cup is limited to USA vs. Europe. A Filippino team of six of the country's best would be wicked, a tough nut to crack. Although many of the Asian lady champions are enjoying their tournament trail here in America, I have not see many Filippino lady champions come to shore -- yet -- but from what I hear, our American champions may have their hands full when and if the Filippino ladies ever venture over here to our shores.

Nothing pleased me more than seeing Santos win the World Summit in NYC. Picture below of Santos, a Filippino champion who has captured the hearts of all who meet him. He's only 44 years old and is still knocking 'em down, most recently with his big win at the World Summit in NYC, which aired last night on ESPN.

WHEN, oh, WHEN will the Mosconi Cup be aired on American TV? I mean, after all, it is an American championship worthy of a little view time, wouldn't you think?

THANKS, Berry! These pictures are the nuts! This is as close as any of us can get to the Mosconi Cup excitement!

My favorites:
Picture No. 45, Captain Archer advising Boy Wonder Gabe Owen;
Picture No. 89, Marcus strategizing with team mate Mika Immonen;
Picture No. 206, Marcus looking back at the crowd after a win;
Picture No. 222, the very essence of Team Euro's spirit; and
Picture No. 126 Gabe Owen's facial expression says it all!

Thanks again, Berry! GREAT photos, a very nice Christmas present to AzBilliards Discussion Forum posters!

Charlie won 5-2 over Davis, USA win the Mosconi 12-9.

Steve played an absolutely awful game.

He should never of been in the team to be honest, the World Number 1 should of been there without any doubt, gone are the days when Sky Sports needs a UK figure, now it should be the very best players in Europe.

When Davis is playing well he is very tough to beat, he's a great shotmaker, and an even better position player.

I've gotten to know Jose a little bit in the past years. He told me that the very first WPC was held in Japan, Tokyo I think, and that he won it. Jose holds over 100 national/international titles, and he was the first Filippino pool player to make the American pool scene. Keith McCready, who lived in California at the time when Jose arrived, became good friends with him instantly. At that time, Jose couldn't have asked for a better host to take him around and show him the sights (LOL). The two of them still remain close to this day. :)

The last WPC, Jose Parica, a UPA member with high ranking at that time, wasn't eligible to represent the United States because of his citizenship. Thankfully, because of Matchroom Sports' endeavor to provide a level playing field in world pool tournaments, Jose Parica did get the opportunity to compete last WPC, along with Earl Strickland.

When the Michelob Amberbock World Summit of Pool occurred, that 8-ball tournament was scheduled on the same dates. It is interesting to see the interest in 8-ball coming back to the fore. It's my game of choice.

With all of the great players from RP, the ladies are the only ones missing on the radar screen. Who should we be on the look-out for? :cool:

Amazing that I've heard of every single one of them! :p

I think Jose may be speaking about a world championship tournament he won in Japan occurring before 1990, and before the 1990-2004 era of the World Pool Championship tournaments a/ka "WPC." I don't know the name of the event at the time of this writing. Jose Parica's list of titles is voluminous. He came to the States well after he was an established player.

How about that Earl Strickland! Look at his stretch, from 1990 to 2002, and he is a five-time U.S. Open winner, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1997, and 2000. I know of no other American player with this kind of track record! AND he's still going strong! :)
