Mosconi Cup Underway

I wonder why they don't have a tie breaker. That would have made for an amazing finish. Ending in a draw is just so... anticlimactic...

So true.

Nobody cares about a draw, I'd rather lose but have a chance of winning the Mosconi than have it end in a draw. This was Europe's year, i can't see them winning it for some time now.

I'd love to see a fairer way of deciding who plays as i don't think either side put out there strongest team.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Splitting hairs over the wording doesn't change the fact that Europe didn't get the cup, and sounds an awful lot like sour grapes. Better luck next year.
Europe cant say that they won .Way to go USA

I agree that it shouldn't end in a tie. It makes the whole event seem pointless
to a casual observer it must seem how I feel about a soccer match ending 0-0. I couldn't imagine any major sporting event end in a tie without somehow being decided. Sure soccer does end many games with a tie but the World Cup would never end in a draw. I guess Earl breaking his cue and Corey moaning like a little girl about nothing is the most exciting thing about the Mosconi Cup this year. The organizers of the event must change the format next year so no draw is possible, if they don't they are in deep trouble.
Cant take it can you the Americans retained the cup even with all the booing and bull horns. It sounds like a little crying to me.

Tristan, I had to read it myself to understand it, but this is what Luke Riches posted on another pool-related forum:

To correct your misconception, if the score finishes 12-12, the Mosconi Cup will have finished a draw, and will be reflected as such for the record. Also the prize money will be split between the two teams.

Team USA will retain the trophy but will not in any way be deemed to have won the Mosconi Cup.

But Europe cant say they won now can they?

It's a shame that we didn't win..
Rather wanted a tie-breaker like some o you suggested...
Mika wasted a good chance to win it this time..

Like Elizabeth says.. No we are not celebrating.. And America is...
Well done to Mike and Corey that could handle the presuure to get to the draw..
That was enough to keep the Cup...
Under immense pressure they did do it.

I'm sorry to see that Elizabeth wants to react like this..
But I've put her on Ignore.. ;)

Congrats for keeping it...

(But I'm still sad for not winning it this time..;) )

Well done to the United States, but it was a tie with the US retaining the Cup, which although not their main objective, was the 'Plan B' if they couldn't win it outright.

I think the reason they celebrated and the Europeans didn't was pretty obvious - the US staged a memorable comeback and snatched the trophy away when Europe really ought to have won it. Mika Immonen especially was culpable with another display of choking when it matters most and David Alcaide should never have been in the pressure-filled situation he found himself in against Deuel. If the US had let a big lead slip and tied at 12-12 I don't think they would have been jumping for joy.

The presssure was intense on Immonen, Davis, Alcaide and Deuel and the Americans just about held it together better. Davis and Immonen really did seem like 2 heavyweights desperately waiting for the bell to ring in the 12th and scarcely able to throw a punch.

I'm disappointed by Europe's capitualtion, although I have to say that I enjoyed watching it immensely and I really have a lot of respect for both sets of players. Johnny Archer epitmoises all that is good about the game and he and Souquet's sportsmanlike words afterwards were music to any pool fan's ears.

Europe will not win this thing until they stop looking at rankings and start looking at players who can take the heat and even be inspired by it - like Deuel was, like Morris always is and like Strickland can be.

I hope to be in Vegas next year for this wonderful event and I really hope some American network can pick it up and broadcast it live somehow. It's such a shame that our friends over the pond are denied seeing their boys give their everything for their country.

from another forum:

In one of the best Mosconi Cup's ever USA retained the trophy after drawing 12-12 with Europe following four thrilling days of pool.

The Mosconi Cup photo rack is now fully updated with more than 200 pictures from all aspects of the competition, including behind the scenes pictures, crowd shots, action images and USA celebrations.

There are also great shots of Earl Strickland's smashed cue and his running battle with the supporters, Corey Deuel sulking and Mika Immonen's reaction to missing the shot that would have won the cup for Europe.
