Sky wins initial lag against Shaw, SVB breaks and runs out. 1-0 USA. Albin v Sky next, Albin plays safe after break and Sky fouls, looks like an Albin runout currently.
 
Styer breaks and forced to push out. Filler gives it back, great hit by Styer, Filler makes contact on next shot but leaves a runnable rack for Styer. Styer runs the table and wins the match, 2-1. Styer looked incredibly composed on that run, solid play.
 
JJ v Kaci next. Dry break for Kaci but hooked the cue ball behind the 2. JJ with a smart push and ties 3 on the rail, Kaci gives it back, JJ with a poor shot on the 1 to leave it open for Kaci. Kaci runs 1-2, misses the bank on the 3. Let’s see what JJ has in him.
 
JJ misses a decently tough 3 but gets lucky on the leave, Kaci makes contact but gives JJ an opportunity. JJ good shot on a 4-8 combo, you can sense the tension as he takes each shot. Short on the 6 after making the 5 but makes it anyways, 7 and 9 left. Makes the 7, good position on 9, and there you have it—the old timer defeats Kaci to make it 3-1 USA.
 
Alcaide made relatively quick work of Reinhold after a bad jump shot on the 2, Alcaide with great composure to run a fairly difficult rack, puts Europe 2-3.

The eagerly anticipated SVB v Shaw next. Both players trade incredible defensive shots back and forth, up until Shaw plays the 3 to break out a tied up 4-9, gets a tough roll and has to play safe on the 4. SVB comes up, makes a 4-8 combo, then another incredible shot to get position on a tied up 5 ball that only has one pocket it can go in. SVB completes the runout in clinical fashion, USA on the hill 4-2.
 
Sky with the most impressive run so far. Huge kick shot on the one and takes care of the rack. Underdog USA with a decisive advantage in the team match, taking care of business 5-2.

Some observations after limited action:

-SVB looking very composed and looks like the guy we have seen win so many individual events, as opposed to his usual form in the MC. If SVB is playing at this world-class level, they may have the best player in the event.
-Alcaide’s run required perfect cue control, and of course he came through. Smart inclusion on this Europe team.
-There was no more anxious moment than watching JJ at the table. After some nervy shots that were just off, he came through to deliver a strong runout, though you could tell he was tense. Picking up a win like that for your team, in his position, has to be a huge confidence booster. Monkey off his back in match 1. This could be huge for USA.
-Styer looked incredible and composed. No better fundamentals and technique than what Tyler possesses, and he just has such a confident demeanor. Could be a dark horse for MVP if USA pulls this off.
 
USA were sizable underdogs in that first match, +145 on my site. Can’t overstate how important that first match was for them. Also, if I recall correctly, there’s a favorable historic record in the MC for teams who win the 1st match. A lot of pool left to be played but the entire tenor of this event is different after USA takes match 1.

Next up, Styer and Reinhold v Albin and Kaci. Europe -185 favorites in this match. Europe wins the lag, here we go.

Jeremy Jones is just as good as anyone else out there. He has played under pressure for big money since most of these guys from Europe were babies!
