It's hard to think Mosconi could of butchered one like that, I hear you.

But how can it not be true? What do you think is at play here?
 
why would he shoot that shot when they both need 1 ball makes no sense
i think that was just a trick shot not what really happened
no way he shoots that shot in a real match lol

It looks like there may have been a safety battle. You can see Ponzi going to sit down just before Mosconi approaches the table.

It wasn't crucial that Mosconi wins the game since he had about a 30 game lead over his nearest opponent when he won the championship. The games won decided the championship.

that might be why he would shoot that shot the game meant nothing
no way would he shoot that with the title on the line with that ball
 
I realize I am in the minority here, but I am not a fan of "trick shots".... Personally, they just don't do anything for me.

However, I did like the videos for their nostalgia.
 
Obviously fake video.
Beyond taking on the rediculous shot, the object ball Willie is hooked behind
and the cueball change position. After he makes his second to last shot he is
just barely hooked but when he actually shoots it he is almost completely behind
the blocking ball because the object ball is now around 1" further off the rail.

Fake in the sense that it was a re-creation. Reputedly Mosconi did make the five-railer to win the game.
