There might already be a thread on this just curious if anyone knows of a good way to keep motivated. Especially with drills.

Play straight pool....keep trying to beat your high run.
It's like having match pressure all the time.

Rack 14 balls and give yourself a break ball to start.

You always have to setup yourself a goal.
Practicing without a goal is not what you should do!

Set goals for yourself. Set smaller goals to get to your overall goal. Never try to accomplish it all at once. Make sure your goals are challenging yet realistic. You could start with one or two drills a day. Set a goal for each drill - an outcome or even a time limit. Then you could add another drill on the next day. You are doing these drills to help yourself get better. Visualize where you want to be and where you could be if you keep doing the drills.

For me it also helps to keep track of my progress. If I'm practicing straight pool, I'll keep track of how many balls I run each time I practice. And I'll challenge myself to beat that run next time. You could also keep track of your successes/failures in executing a drill. Sometimes it's motivating to see the change. If it's a good change, there's motivation to keep getting better. If it's a bad change, there's motivation to keep from getting worse.

If you still can't find the motivation, leave it alone for a while. Find something else to occupy yourself. Come back to it later.

Another idea is to find some motivational tools (books, videos, music, etc.). Sometimes all it takes for me to get motivated is a good song or a simple quote. You always have the motivation inside somewhere. You just have to know how to trigger it.

Good luck in finding what works for you!

Don't do the drills until you are bored. I do them, but in small increments (10-15 minutes tops). Doing them correctly and concentrating for a short while is more valuable than doing them half assed after becoming bored. One thing about drills, your progress can be measured. I used to keep a log of my results so you can look back to see how far you've come.

I used to Gamble sexual favors with my floozie of the week.....

There are times I miss being single.....

Regaurdless, wagering of any type always keeps ya motivated.

This is what I was going to suggest, and I see it's the very first reply!

If you can find someone to practice straight pool with, it's even better. Just make sure they don't run 100 and out on you every time, lol. Find a "weaker" player than that. ;-)

Good luck!

i am going through a case of idon'tgiveashititis right now. i could be doing anything other than playing pool and i'd be happy. it is very hard to stay motivated sometimes. sometimes a break helps. i took a week off and coulnd't wait to get back to the table for anything, drills games whatever. then i was stuck playing 5 days in a row and i am right back to not wanting to play at all. this has all happened in the last two weeks. i think i need about three or four weeks away from the table just to recharge.

How bad do you want it?

How bad do you want to be the best in your playing circle, league, pool hall or town.

How bad do you want to improve?

The answers to these questions keep me motivated. You have to nurture your own reasons for playing or you'll just be playing for fun (nothing wrong with that).

Very difficult to do sometimes. When I was younger I always found playing for money, whatever amount was always a good motivator to keep me on my toes. Even more so when playing for more than I could really afford.

If it's just being motivated to play that is more difficult, I now find maybe spending some time completely away from the table does work.

Thanks for all the replies guys I hope something works seeing as I am trying to make the Texas Open for the first time and I just wanna be at my peak performance. I just live in a college town where there is virtually no pool scene except for league players and a handful of players. But the problem I run into is I get tired of gambling the same five guys. And seeing as I am a kid myself I cannot afford to travel much to any of the bigger cities unless I have a ride with someone. So any new ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
