I've been searching the forum about ferrule materials, but haven't found much on MP Ivory. How does it compare to the other materials available?

What type of install do you use, IE, capped, sleeve, etc?

I have the tube & the rod. My BLACK HEART CUES come with the tube, but for smaller shafts, I use the rod. I also use the rod, for capped ferrules. For break Qs I use Agis, or one piece phenalic...JER

P.S. I see that Atlas, doesn't list the rod on their web site. I hope they still make it.

I have some & have used it...as others said, its a bit soft. It does play well though and looks a lot like Micarta when finished correctly. Downside is that it will crack if abused...or used to break with. I've seen beaters come back 2 days later, swearing they did not break with it and yet its cracked in multiple places. On the other hand...I've used it before on my personal cue and never had a problem.

I went to a 9/32" hole & have no problem with splitting. This ferrule, in combo with my standard Water Bufalo tip, gives a good solid hit. IMO...JER

I have a guy shooting with one of My sneaky conversions that has an MP ivory ferrule. He wanted the hit soft, but I was hesitent to put one of these ferrules on there, because even though I explained to him many times It would'nt be a good idea to break with It, I knew that he would anyway, and ofcoarse He does break with the cue as well as shoot with It. Luckily I thought ahead, and used a fibre backer;) . He's got to be over 230pds or more, and has no mercy when He breaks with the cue, but the ferrule is holding up well. He mashed the tip up pretty good at first, but I just trimmed the sides and It was good to go.

The stuff can crack though, especially when the sidewalls are too thin. reducing the tenon size is an option, and I have done that before, but My personal preference is that there's a fine line as too how much, and at what point It starts taking away from the feel of a cue. You could cap with the solid rod also if that was desirable, but I guess most alterations could produce some differences in feel. The tip and ferrule seem to be a touchy area when trying to get the best of both worlds sometimes.:)
