Alright, my wife and I picked Matt up at Mishima station around 5:00pm this evening. We proceeded to go to a ramen shop and have dinner and then over to the pool hall.

We started playing at 6:25pm and finished around 1:45am. I personally had a really good time. Matt is just about 10 years younger than I am but I think we got along fairly well.

We started off with 8-ball. Matt says that's what he plays in his league. I usually shoot 14.1 and a little 9-ball every now and then. I haven't played 8-ball in over 10 years easily. At first I wasn't really thrilled about 8-ball, because I didn't like it much way back when, but then I started seeing similarities to straight pool and really started getting into it. I actually enjoyed playing 8-ball tonight and when Matt comes back to Japan I'll be looking forward to playing it again.

Ok we played 5 sets of 8-ball racing to 5. Score tally goes
MULLY-MATT
5 4
5 1
5 2
5 2
5 3

Then we moved over to 9-ball. 2 races to 5.

I know it looks like he didn't do too well but to be honest, Matt is a pretty straight shooter. I didn't tell him this but I was really impressed with his long straight in shots. He fired them bad boys in like it was nothing. I don't know why but I was having serious problems with side pocket shots. It was pitiful. It was so bad that we were actually making jokes about it. He hardly missed any side pocket shots, regardless of the angle he had, but when he did miss I told him that "imitation is the highest form of flattery". We got a good laugh out of that...........I guess you had to be there. But yeah, I'd venture to guess that I missed more than 80% of the side pocket shots I tried.

I told him that I wasn't going to report this but I gotta be honest, we played 3 games of one pocket. The first game he got me good 8-0. I missed one safety and he ran 8 and out. I was impressed with that because there was a cluster or 2 he had to take care of to get out and he got through it really well. Second game he got me again 8-4. Last game I won 8-4, I think that's what the final score was. I won that last game but to be totally honest he had 2 very unfortunate scratches that gave it to me. Had it not been for those scratches he probably would have taken that last one too.

Overall it was really fun hanging out with Matt tonight. Matt, like I said when we dropped you off at the hotel, next time you're over here you gotta come down to Shizuoka and camp out at out place for the weekend. By that time we'll be moved into the new house and there will be plenty of room for you stay. We won't have to concern ourselves with finishing up early enough for me to make a 2 hour drive home either.

Thanks for everything, man. I had a good time.

I offered to let him use my jump cue:thumbup:

Hi Mully,

Thanks for you and your wife's hospitality. I had a real good time, last night. Even though I lost almost every game.
Thanks for the compliment on my long straight in shots. I thought my masse shots might have discouraged you a little, but it didn't seem to phase you at all. A lot of players see me nail shots like that, and get the impression that I'm a super bad azz, when I'm really not.

I'm sure your back is a little sore, as is mine. That was a good little session of pool, last night. I could have grabbed some coffee and a bite to eat, and kept playing. But I forgot you guys were driving home. So, it's a good thing we didn't play a long session. I'm glad you and the wife got home safely. I was a little worried about you guys driving 2 hours home that late at night.
Yeah, my back is usually sore in the middle, but this time it was sore in the lower back...probably because I was the racking b*tch. :embarrassed2:
Like I said, last night...I usually play better than that. I think I need to focus on my aim. You know when you have a shot that seems so easy that you just fire away at it....well, I tend to do that a lot. I've really got to work on my focus. If that's not a good excuse, I've got a few others....:D
Next time I'm in J-town, I'll bring my cues and you can check them out. I think you will really like them.

That first game of 1P was a blurr for me. I just remember you having a decent break, and I had to figure out how to keep from selling out. I played a safety, then you played a safety, and then I just remember shooting a bunch a balls in. I don't think I have ever ran 8 and out in 1P.
The last game of 1P, I was looking at a shot, and tried to decide whether to go for the easy/safe shot, or take a little risk. At that point, I was at 6 and you were at 1. So, I went for the riskier shot. Next thing I know we're at 4, and I was in bad shape.

I really enjoyed the 1P games, probably because there's a lot more thinking involved. I've gotta get out of Auto-Pilot and start using my head.

It's good to get beat down like that, from time to time. It kind of serves as a wake up call.

Good luck in your tourny, next month. If you see Oi-san, tell him I said hello. He is traveling right now. So, I didn't get a chance to see him during this trip. You guys can compare each others' SouthWest cues.

P.S. Mully is not a big, mean ogre.:p

Yeah, you had a couple of pretty good curve shots. That first one you did was really nice.

Bring your cues next time so you have a reason to beat me. I put the voodoo curse on that Scruggs of mine you were shooting with. hehe!

Thanks again for coming down. Tomoko and I are both looking forward to seeing you again. Bring your better half with you sometime, she deserves a vacation.

Nah, we weren't gambling.

The tournament is a pro tour stop here in my area. It's open to the amateur players that are regulars in that room. I'm not a regular in that particular room because it's pretty far from here, but I know the owner really well and he thinks I can do alright so he invited me to play.

I'm guessing I'll be 2 and out against the pros but I'm going to give it a shot.

Matt let me keep the change from the bill so I made 3 bucks off of him :D
