Mushroom Tip

Can anyone explain to me why some of the top players play with the "mushroom" shaped tip on their cue? It looks like a regular 9 to 9.5mm brass ferrule, but the tip looks considerably larger. Also, how do they get it to mushroom like that? Thanking you in advance, Wolf

it's supposed to help prevent unintentional side from being applied. you just glue on an oversize tip to make one. so i you have a 9mm, glue on a 10mm tip and don't trim it flush with ferrule.
