I love players who try to combo the 9 any foreseeable chance they get. They're called easy money -- fish. Get better at getting out and playing safes, and you'll love them too.

if you want 'random joe' in the bar/poolhall to play you for a few jellybeans, keep the combos. people like to think they have a chance, and seeing as how slop is the accepted rules, it will aviod confusion. :P

if you're matching up with a 'real' player, be as civilized as you want. you can play call shape if you want.

"I even think that call-shot can restrict a player's range of creativity / knowledge when they are faced with shots that can be played to give double, or even triple chances.

Such shots are not flukes, they are planned...accounted for in the planning anyway. Perhaps players should get a 2-call shot option. eg. 6 in the corner and/or 5 in the center. Just a thought" says Colin

thats what I think too
here I have to call both if theyre going to happen or they both are respotted. Why cant I have one or the other. Thats China. In America you have to call shots. In Australia, you dont. Different cultures play it differently.
Are there standard rules. For nineball yeah but for eightball no.
I like the 'or' option.
I was playing in korea in a bar and the rules changed with whoever was in the room, which nationality and I had never heard of calling your shot on the black. We play in australia if it goes in its good enough. Good Luck. So the eight jaws out but as it does finds the other pocket. I've won. So I think. Its my table so it should be my rules but the canadians go nuts, get so angry and accuse me of cheating saying you may be the best pool player here but you cheat. Oh my god when do they get it that people play it differently as just because youre used to doing it that way a thousand times in your hometown, somewhere else they don't.
Just as theres not one language theres not one set of rules for pool either.
Id like to know if IPT has two shots if you scratch but the failing of australias game and the UKs too is that they do, so safety pays hefty dividends in the latter stages . Having said that its been my obsrevation that when the crunch comes, an attacking player will beat a defensive player. I like both now though. After watching the China Open snooker on tv in my spare time I saw how worthy snookers can be.

Back to the subject though , its the carefree freedom and randomness of nineball that makes it appealing. It has more to offer in that respect. Like caroms thats simple enough but playing the cueball onto other balls to pot them or to play a safety thats cool. Why call everything. It takes the fun out of it. Who wants to play on skill alone. Thats what games are about. Random permutations. Sure the more skill you have the luckier you'll be but if I'm playing a social player they feel better playing nineball then eightball against me cause they have more of a chance. But then I only play it for fun. I just can't see nineball as a serious game. So the less rules there the better.

LOL KISS?? This is the entire point. Don't keep it simple. Make it tough. Call your shot.

say no to slop and say goodbye to large tourney fields and easy $$ games. the bangers will all be scared, and they provide most of the 'donations' in tourneys and cheap gambling. we don't have enough players as it is, let alone alienating a segment.

i say: fire away. if you want call shot, play 8 ball.

I would be fine with adding a rule that says that the nine must be called if played out of sequence, but only if it is understood that if the nine is missed, if any other ball goes in on the same shot, the innning continues.
I agree with SJM. This removes most of the slop while keeping the creativity of nine-ball.

I agree Cue Dog...but the nine on the break really does not happen that often. We only remember when it happens against us at the end of a match!
Jersey Red used to say "It is a great game that starts with a lucky shot!"

There are a few things I don't like about nine-ball, including slop and the ability to win with a break.

My personal solution is that I tend to play other games instead, and leave nine ball to the players that enjoy it. YMMV.
