I really wish that I had a good friend who was a player and was willing to play pool this often with me.

Well the problem is that you and acedotcom are saying that this sort of pool serves no purpose, that it is not competitive, that this is "what has gone wrong with the game of pool", and you are preaching these things as if they are true (not a problem by itself). BUT, if all you are saying is that it is true "to you", then that's utterly insignificant to anyone but you. But if you MEANT to say that in actuality, what you are saying is true, then say so.

In any case, it's ridiculous to say this shows what has gone wrong with the game of pool. How can you say a deep love for the game of pool, the very thing that got most of us interested in the game of pool, is an instance of what has gone wrong with the game of pool? Do you even know how miserable some people's lives are who live to gamble, who aren't "nits"? Even people who win a lot are miserable people. A lot of people who are "nits" probably value some things far more than money (heaven forbid!).

I also don't see how you could determine that it's not competitive, because what is competitive to one person changes drastically for other people. What drives a person's competitive spirit all depends on their aims. Many people simply desire to win, no matter the stakes. It's about winning and the respect for winning. And a desire to win has no necessary connection to a desire for money. I'm sure that you realized this, which is why you realized that there is no case for saying this cannot be competitive, and hence why you said this was only the case "for you".
 
lets go the middle ground and say .....its more competitive when there is action, and most of players like things to be a bit more competitive than nonplayers....hows that? everybody happy?
