My first GSBT event, Good and bad

This is my opinion, of my first GSBT event weekend. There are good points, and bad points. I had a couple of conversations with Shannon and Marge. I will be honest, and I hope it comes across as constructive, and not bashing.

First, when me and my friends decided to go to this, I had heard there were 35 tables at Michaels, and they had 12 Diamond 9 footers. This lead me to believe, {mistakenly} there would be at least 20 bar tables. So, we get there, and sign up, and nearly 100 in the 9 ball with only 7 bar tables to play on. Handicaps are C=6, B=7, A=9, and AA=10.... 64 player field in the bank division, with I believe 9 big tables. The calcutta was supposed to start at 1:30, and got started late, which always happens at tournies. First matches started around 5:30. This was very frustrating for me, and several other working stiffs, who are usually in bed by 11 or 12 every nite. We know we are gonna be up all nite, and hoping they don't plan to play straight thru.

Also, I believe it was around 7:30 Sat. nite, someone crashed into a pole nearby, and the electricity was out for about 2 hours in the whole area. This event was NOT getting off to a good start. Around 9:30, we were all back at it.

So, to shorten this just a tad, I finish my last match Saturday nite, and head to the hotel, about 5:30am. My next match is scheduled for 11am. The hotel we stayed at, for some reason, felt it necessary to clean our room, at 8am, then came back at 9am, and woke us again. With 3 people in our room, we got up at 9:30, to get ready.

Matches were under way on time Sunday, but my 11am time got pushed back to around noon, because of conflicting events I believe. I was still able to hit a few balls on the 9 footer to prepare for my next bank match. Marge and the GSBT staff, had an unbelievably huge task, to try and run both events at the same time. She has a great system for this, and they shuffled things around a bit, and did a fabulous job keeping things rolling.

I had told my friends, that if I happened to be the only one still in, at 8pm Sunday we would leave to come back home. At 7pm, I played my bank match, which would be my last match of the tournies. Louis Demarco, beat me in the final 4 of the winners side, leaving me to forfeit out in 5th-6th in the bank. I was in the final 8 of the winners side, in the 9 ball. That left me to forfeit out in 9th thru 12th. Now, moneywise.... I had $85 in entry fees. $80 in the 2 calcuttas and $25 in hotel. $190 in, and got back $325 total. So, for all you money grinders out there. I didn't get close to winning either event, and still made a profit...

In the end, I had a great time, and got to play some great players. I love pool, and want to see it grow. So, my opinions about this event, are just that, my opinions. Overall, Shannon and Marge did a fabulous job with this tourney but,I honestly believe, there should have been a cutoff at 64 in the 9ball. Shannon made the comment, during one of our conversations, that the next event there will be at least 10 tables, or a cutoff at 64.
The start time on Saturday, needs to be earlier. I know most pool players sleep in, but this is an amateur event, and would be better served. Calcutta start at 11 and play starting at 2pm and no later. After the 9 ball calcutta was done, the matches on the first 6 tables could have started. A final match starting time on Saturday nite of 1am, and start back at 10am on Sunday. Work the brackets so the last people playing Sat. nite, get the lastest possible start time on Sunday.

In my opinion, if you want to keep the bulk of the players coming back, you have to allow them to enjoy their time. It has to be able to finish up at a reasonable time on Sunday, for the regular people, who have to go back to work on Monday. This was more of a test on endurance, than pool playing and only the guys out playing pool on a full time basis, are gonna be there at the end.

I didn't total up the money paid back, and had no desire to. Shannon and Marge were right up front with everyone who stopped and was enquiring about payouts. It's my conclusion, that its mostly people who don't work, that complain the most about money taken out to cover salaries and expenses. They made some changes at this event, as to payouts, and as in any business, things will always change. I believe if I remember right, totals were around $2000 for first in each event. For those who think this is not enough, stay home. The payouts spread down far enough, that you don't have to get 4th place or higher, just to get even {well, unless you're one of the top bids in the calcutta}. I am sure there were some other suggestions, I had discussed during the weekend. But I am drained, and back to my real life.

Best of luck to Shannon and Marge. Thanks for all the hard work, and I assure you, we'll come back and play the next one too.

I 2nd everything Sam said.... well put. We also forfeited out, BUT we had all of ourselves in the calcutta so it didn't hurt anyone but us and hopefully helped the tournament some by saving some time. I agree, it is well run, but without additional tables or a limited field, I won't go back. Michael's did a great job of getting the tables ready and we appreciated that! It is a nice place and there was a little action from the locals so that helps. Overall, with this being well more than DOUBLE the number of entries they had the last time AND having a 2 hour delay because of the power outage, I am pleasantly surprised that it did get over at 5am Monday. I was expecting it to end more like 11AM or so! Cudo's to all who did well!

Sam, your post is excellent and your recommendations are spot on with what I'd have to say.

I too had to forfeit both of my matches on Sunday but I was in the losers side of both events. I'd have went back but would have only had 2 hours sleep and just did not have the stamina to do it.

I watched some some of your play and have to say that you are a fantastic player. If you'd ever like someone to practice with, I'd love the competition. You play considerably better than I but I do love the game and friendly competition.

I place none of the blame for the issues on Shannon and Marge. Many of the circumstances were beyond their control. The power outage caused considerable turmoil and the large field was unexpected, I believe. I too talked to Shannon and he promised more bar tables next time. I also felt that the dual events caused some congestion due to the overlapping of match play. By that I mean, it was common that a player was up to play on one event while he was called for the other event.

I am sure some things were learned by all. I'd like to see them streamline the bracketing process by some sort of computer program, this could have possibly been done while the player auction was going on. That would have saved time too.

Overall, thanks to Shannon and Marge for another event where I know they worked their a$$ off. Days were long, they were always friendly and did the best they could considering the circumstances.

It was nice chatting with you at the event too Sam as well as a few other AZ'ers that I got to meet.

And thanks to my good friend Worminator for kicking my butt in the first round of banks.. He's a great guy if anyone has not had the chance to meet him!

Very well said by all!

If Michael's would replace the current Valleys and 8' tables with 7' Diamonds, I don't think you could ask for a better tournament venue. There are not many places that could run a 100 man field of 9 Ball and a 64 man field of Banks simultaneously... but with that set-up it could be done, and done well at Michaels.

I really enjoyed the event. MOJOE could not have said it better, Shannon & Marge worked their tails off and were always pleasant to talk to. Great job guys!!!

Joe - it literally made me sick to my stomach that we drew each other in the first round of the event. I would rather have to play a world champion than one of my best friends in the first round of a 64 man field.

The grind

So it sounds like the typical 2 day event grind, yes a test of endurance to be sure.

I would like to see more 2 day events start earlier on Saturday. First round on the tables by noon. In double elimination tournaments playing 7 sets day 1 leaves you in poor physical condition to do well day 2.

I'm glad you play for the love of the game, the money has to be secondary.

Thanks for an honest review of the GSBT, I wish I was close enough to go.

Great reviews from all parties. Sounds like Shannon and Marge are sensitive to the issues brought up, and as Joe mentioned, it's always fixing things "on the fly" when you have big events like this. Sounds like it was another good tournament.

I was surprised at them having the 16 oz bottles of beer for $2.75 after a guy at the Derby told us beer prices were a lot higher in Ohio than at the casino. Anyways, I decided late Sat. nite to have a beer when a friend offered to buy me one. As I was sipping that one, and waiting to play, they announced we would be finishing this round of play, and come back tomorrow. At 2:15 they called last call, and I decided one more won't hurt, so I get another beer. 15 minutes later, they announce they are coming round to collect all alcoholic beverages. At 2:35 I was told I had to give up that beer, not even being half done with it. I'm not a big drinker, so I drink slower than most. I feel like if you're gonna give someone last call, make it early enough they have a chance to drink it. Or, at the very least, when you have a bunch of out of towners, warn them they only have 15 minutes to consume it. Other than that, the venue was a great place for a tourney, with a couple of hotels really close. Decent prices on food and drinks.

I have been to a lot of typical tournies, and they are a grind. Arrive at 10am, and start at noon, play til 1 or 2am. Then come back Sunday and start at 11am and play til 10pm... That's pretty typical to me. Adding the bank tourney, makes it a little different too, but I liked it a lot. Not many bank tournies around.
