My Goldcrown I Dropped its Skirt - Literally!

Had a very strange - and potentially dangerous - occurance yesterday while playing on my Gold Crown I.

The table dropped its skirt, literally. See photos below.

I was simply shooting, and thud. The whole thing just fell off. I haven't had a skirt come off this quick since college....

Thank god my little one wasn't around; she loves to crawl under the table when I play. Could've killed her.

There doesn't seem to be any damage to the skirt, but how the hell could this happen? The table was installed in July, 2008. A closer look determined it was not attached to the ball box, either.

Ironically, I've been patiently waiting for a highly regarding mechanic to swing his way through Raleigh (spoke with him many times, great guy), but I may have to expedite the work now with this happening.

Let me know your thoughts and perspectives.

no problem, take the hinges off the aprons and cut them down to only use 4 on the sides and 3 on the head end, make them about 6 inches long. The they will flip into the rail easier and you shouldn't have any problems

don't put them any further than they already are, essentially taking out the middle between the ends of each piece

I am not comfortable with changing the design of the table. I suspect this is an install issue. I'll see what others think. Thanks for your perspective.

You should be able to call a local mechanic, preferrably one that has experience with this model,to come out and put your top back together the right way.

You can ask all you want. The solution offered was done so by an experienced Mechanic I am sure it is also a tested method. You can spend a few more dollars and hope it was done right and let the little one crawl away under some one elses work again or you can take his advice do it your self and know it was done right and not wonder , but know the little one is safe.

I had skirt problems on my GC II.

The idiot that set my table up originally left about .25"-.375" gaps in spots around the table between the skirt and the rail. They couldn't get them to fit and just left them that way. The ball box was not securely fastened either and dropped a few inches. I didn't want them coming back to fix it because they were hacks so how good could the "fix" be, but I had them come back anyway. They made it fractionally better.

I finally was lucky enough to have RKC stop over and set the table up again, in effect, a complete restoration. I won't list everything wrong with the table out of bandwidth consideration for this forum but Glen took the right side skirt and swapped it with the left side skirt and they fit perfectly. A table mechanic concept far above the heads of the idiots who originally worked on the table. The ball box also fit perfectly and securely when he was done, with minimal effort.

sometimes these are a pain in the ass but there are a few tricks to make them fit on easily. As my perspective was not appreciated I will let other mechs explain how to get these on. Other than changing the sides back and forth there are many more "moves to try". From your pic its easy to see why they fell off. Its also easy to get them back on and anyone can do it. Again this is like going to the doctor and when he tells you what to do"you say' thanks for your opinion but I will go to someone else".

Any beginner or intermediate mechanics reading this thread should take note of this. If something doesn't seem to fit right, the first thought in your head should be to flip components around. More often than not you'll be saving yourself alot of cursing.

For what it's worth, I agree with you ompletely on the fix. And mainly because I came across a table that was doing the exact same thing. One time it waited 3 weeks after it was installed to drop. Unfortunately it had the shortened brackets already. We found about a 1" portion of one bracket that was just bent a little. It was enough to cause the whole skirt to line up wrong. We cut the bend off with a hacksaw and put it back up. That skirt stays on like a nun's now.
