its up to you Dave, but i am not sure if i spent all the time, trouble, effort, and $$$ on this lesson that i would share everything you gleam from Earl? seems like some are wanting something for nothing. but, thats your call.

anyway, have a great time, enjoy!

You have got to be frickin kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!! DCP, you get a lot of slack around here, and until now, I have been on your side. YOU ARE THE LAST PERSON ON EARTH that should make that comment. To suggest that someone not share tips that they learn with the board, coming from you sir is a huge slap in the face to the board and those that offer you help. I not only urge all instructors to stay clear from you, but I encourge every every every person to ignore ALL of your posts asking for help. You should be ashamed of yourself.......

Gotta admit, I thought the same thing. Here's a guy that posts all the time, "How would you play this shot", and asking for advice.... free advice... many times on this board. Then he (DCP) posts the above. I don't know him, but this is very strange behavior.

You know i really wish people like youself would just back off Earl..whatever quirks you have on him..it wasnt warented in this thread..someone was posting something good about Earl and how glad and priviliged they were to get to spend time with a living legend..dont be a kill joy:mad: be a  poster ;)
Very well said and I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know why someone would try to ruin this thread with a statement like that. I'm excited for the man who's lucky enough to get to spend 4 hours with a legend in pocket billiards.

Let me just explain something about the crowd. what you were seeing wasn't barbarianism (lol i see where you are coming from), but good old english football crowd banter and atmosphere. Whilst i don't doubt for a second there were probably a few yobs there whose sole aim was shout insults at earl, i can guarantee you 95% of that crowd had nothing against any player, not least of all Earl.

Anybody who has ever been to a good english football match will testify what the atmosphere is about. it's about getting together with the lads, drinking a few lagers, eating pie and chips, and BANTER. there's next to nothing in the world like 30 odd thousand fans all singing their hearts out, "the referee's a w****r, the referee's a w****r", or "you're s**t, and you know you are, you're s**t!" etc etc. it's all in good fun and nothing personal is meant by 99% of people and everybody understands. there is no sport in the world to offer this sort of camarderie and atmosphere and i'm very proud it's very much a british thing.

the problem here is two things. one, playing pool in this environment, and two. earl playing pool in this environment.

the first is another debate. the second there is two parts to it. firstly Earl is an American from North Carolina. He is not used to this environment, and understandarbly so! second, earl is a more emotional hotheaded character than most, which makes it all a lot lot worse. and he then starts getting lulled into it all and starts talking back to the crowd and it escalates, and it gets nasty. which is extremely unfortunate.

the irony in all this is Earl is a fans favourite and extremely unique personality. if he played played the crowd differently, he would have the crowd pulling for him like no other player could possibly compete with!

i know we're veering off topic here but i felt i needed to explain this.

back on topic, good luck with your lesson with Earl and tell us as much as you can when you're done!

and you sir, are an ass.
I'm not doubting what you are saying. And perhaps it was all in good fun. Who knows? But I notice you don't see that sort of behavior during Snooker matches.

now thats funny, but typical............:p

my point on here was centered around the fact that i got the impression some on here wanted Dave to share EVERYTHING he learned from Earl, not just a small tip or two. we are talking Earl Strickland here - one of the all time greats! not the local guy who plays at the pool hall.

i've asked for a tip now and then on how to do something, but i've NEVER EVER asked anyone to tell me what all they learned during a lesson, or from an instructor. i dont recall asking everyone that took a lesson from Mark Wilson to tell me what went on 100% so i wouldnt have to go and have him instruct me, did i?

if i was an instructor and i found out a student was going around telling EVERYTHING i taught him, i'd call that student up and ask him to stop. i'd tell him i make $$$ doing this, and if people want to learn from me then they should come to me and spend $$$, not ask someone else indirectly.

its like a cuemaker told me once, "Tell that so and so guy to quit telling everyone they have to go through him to buy one of my cues, he's hurting my business acting like he knows all about the services i offer!"

geez people, give me a break. everybody blows everything way, WAY out of proportion.

DCP

I still can't seem to find any logic in your reply. I don't think anyone asked for anyone to provide a complete play by play of the lesson. You post not an occasional request for a tip, but a continious plea for help on an almost daily basis. "How do I draw the cue ball downtable" . Your cue maker comment, again, no logic. If the student posted that he had a great experiance with earl, it would help earl sell more lessons.

Again, Your comment was way out of line...

enjoy Dave!

i think you should lay off DCP.

he's got a point, it is a bit cheeky to expect a full detailed report of the lesson, why should he spread everything Earl's told him over the forum. it was his lesson.

i'm not having a go at the people asking for a lesson report and details though, i was one of them. just saying you've got to admit it's a bit cheeky asking.

I'm not doubting what you are saying. And perhaps it was all in good fun. Who knows? But I notice you don't see that sort of behavior during Snooker matches.

Actually you do get it in a smaller way. in all the big games in tense frames you get encouraging shouts from the crowd, "Come on Steve", "Go on Jimmy" etc etc. and in exciting moments during the play as well. but it's very minimal. and when things get a bit over excited a simple "settle down now" from the ref does the trick. the key thing is having the right amount for the game and snooker has got it down to a tee.

Actually Mike, it is the exact opposite for me. I WANT all of my students to tell everyone they know every bit of information I give to them. You can tell people all you like...it still doesn't equate a personal private lesson to teach you how to apply that information to your individual pool game. By my students "spreading the word", so-to-speak, I get a lot more referrals. Other people see for themselves the improvement of students who have worked hard at applying the knowledge learned in a lesson. They always ask, "Who taught you that?", and then they contact me (or another qualified instructor) themselves...kinda like YOU did!:D I also work with a lot of people who want to become (better) instructors themselves. There can never be too many good instructors out there!

Tap, tap, tap! That was exactly my reason for answering a question on here about how Mark Wilson changed my stroke, and why. I'm one happy camper, and I'd like others to know that, and I'm sure Mark is happy with me spreading the good word, and spread it I have!
